I have a domain called touchedme.com, the idea is to be a joke, for example Jon.touchedme.com , When I originally set it up, I had it requiring an email, which would send a verification code, and then would have to verify the email in order to activate the claimed name. I've turned off this requirement for the time being (as I think that was probably the main deterrent from using the site).

It's still setup to prevent bots from auto submitting in a way (not the best method but a method none-the-less).

I need some people to test it (particularly on IE since I'm on a mac) by claiming some names.

Right now there's only two things you can really do.
1) Create a name to go in front of .touchedme.com which will then also be the caption of that page.
2) Embed a picture from a tinypic url (provide it the subdomain and the image name).

Example : http://azn_kids.touchedme.com/

I don't have it setup for editing yet (for when new feature become available), but thats what the secret code is for, just in case I set it up to allow you to change the pic or another setting down the road.

Right now I'm trying to make sure that people are able to submit the form (name, pic and code), and that the subdomain correctly activates right after submitting the form.

Also I wanted opinions on what else could I add feature wise to make the 'joke' more worthwile. And if those features existed do you think most avid users would do the email verification, or should I best leave that off.

And for those who really have no input and just want to make fun of it... do so, that's what it's there for.

that tiny pic address is fucking stupid. not user friendly at all - why not just copy and paste the url from tinypic? the 13 year olds who use the site are not going to understand subdomains and shit. also, it choked on the underscore so i used a dash.

Clarify "choked". (PS: you don't enter underscore yourself, just a space, it gets converted to an underscore by the script).

The original idea was I just didn't want people linking a pic from anywhere, where as on tinypic you can't just edit the pic, and you're subject to their usage policy (ie: not my problem).

Though your suggestion is a good one and I'll just use a text box and have it validate on the next page as being a proper url (from tinypic, or pbase, or whatever).

And I definitely need to get the editing capability in, for those... 'mistakes'.

it didn't choke - but said i couldn't put in an underscore... which was goofy since your example above has an underscore... but i see what you did there. ;) Maybe a First Name / Last Name field would be better (opens it up to a lot more names too!

also - going to do anything about that fact that you can only have one john johnson (for example)?

this is a stupid joke - but it's pretty funny.

you can do a first name last name, just put a space between them, as it says right on the site "(letters, numbers and spaces only)", it gets shown as an underscore in the subdomain (but as a space on the site when you goto it)
 
Kinda reminds me of aninote's website youaremyfriend.com. It shit down recently though.

1. at the very least put a link to your new touched.me page at the end of that message.

2. I hate having to go through tinypic .... work out a better T&C then allow direct uploads. It's much more convenient for your users.

On a side note ... don't you fucking love wildcard subdomains!!!!

All very good points, also can you have multiple periods like that?
Also I am not comfortable at this time allowing direct upload onto the server. I'll figure something out once I finish up some coding projects I'm doing for clients right now.

Yep ... this works fine (aside from it being a "name not claimed" page)

Usually with wildcard subdomains, all urls get directed to one file (usually index.php) ... from there you parse out the sub-domain and render the appropriate page (usually from a database). Think of it just like a $_GET variable except it has to be parsed out of the domain.

For your needs it might be very easy, just edit index.php to str_replace('.','_',$subdomain) and it will change the period to underscore by default and your script should work just as it is now.

Of course that means that gary_thiem and gary.thiem cannot be 2 different pages.
