If you want something trustworthy you need to go with an ak47. Easy to use, dont need much cleaning, very deadly. This one comes with VODKA.

I'm with Skippy, and not just because the name has emotional ties for me.
Revolvers don't jam, they're easier to clean, and frankly, if you need more than one shot to drop someone, you shouldn't have a gun.
I've got a S&W m27 .357... Same as used by the local PD apparently. The missus wants me to get rid of it, and I'm actually thinking she may be right. As it turns out, we have the statistically proven best form of home protection: a fucking big dog. He's actually really friendly, but he does weigh in at 38kg and happens to have a HUGE jaw, so I can understand why people would be shit scared...
Point is we've never had a break in, although all of my neighbours had back in le-sands, and two of my new neighbours have in the past 6 months.

Definitely not. In that case, you better remember to save one for yourself.
For a concealed handgun, you want to go with either a .40 or .45 (subcompact). Head over to the nearest gun range and you can rent a gun to shoot. They let you swap it out, so try out all the .40 and .45's until you find the one that feels the most comfortable in your hand.
When you find the model you like, shop around for the best deal and ALWAYS keep it loaded with hollow point bullets. If you actually have to use it, you want to stop the fucker immediately. Also, with regular bullets you also run the risk of them going straight through and hitting someone else.
The scary guy at the gunshop swore that the Springfield XD series is the best thing out there right now. I poked around on the internet a bit and people seem to like them. Good thing too, because I already filled out the paperwork last weekend and am picking up a Springfield XD-40 cal tomorrow.
I'm not much of a gun-loving redneck, but I figure everyone should know how to shoot a handgun. Plus taking it down to the range is going to be a great stress reliever

Like everyone else has said, the Remington 870 is nice, or you can go with the Mossberg 500 as they are relatively similar. Also, some may have two barrels: One for home defense ( obviously shorter) and one for trap shooting/hunting.
Also, I highly recommend the Walther P22 and Walther P99, I own both. Great guns and accurate as hell.
The Kahr P9 is a nice compact 9mm, small enough for a womans hand.

The hope is to never HAVE to use them at all, but if the time ever comes, you've gotta be ready.
People said there would never be mass pandemonium in the US , that we are a very civilized country ,ect. Then hurricane Katrina happened , roving bands of gangs killing ,raping , looting en-masse. There are quite a few stories of people standing their ground during the weeks of chaos, and believe me, many were quite happy they took those "Crazy" precautions and had firearms.
It's better to be prepared and never have to use it, than to be not prepared and need it.
As for a sugguestion, I say remington 870 or a mossberg 500. I wouldn't go with a rifle or a pistol, there's ALOT more margin of error with a shotgun than a rifle or pistol. If you don't go to the range every week, when the adreniline kicks in, you won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn. In addition, I would be very careful of how you use the safe/lock systems, as most people can't open combos when the clock is ticking and there's a real threat (Very true story).
Get a shotgun with 00 buck , there's a low chance of over-penetration as they will only go through about 3-4 layers of drywall then stop. Rifles can go through homes and cause collateral damage (You don't want to hit a neighbor). Birdshot will barely make it through clothing + 1" of muscle before stopping, far too low for a lethal hit. The FBI states that a bullet must go through 12" to be considered completely effective (00 is about 8").

Springfield Armory XD is a badass pistol, that would be my full sized handgun of choice. A handgun loaded with some hollow tips in the mini-vault that was posted earlier in the thread would be a great call for home defence IMO. Quick access, yet still stored safely away from children.

@jdomaha: I hope you saw the news about last night's accident the young couple in Lincoln had. They were spending time at the range learning to shoot and even spent time practicing clearing their apartment in case of a home invasion. He's cleaning the shotgun one second and the next she's dead. If you're going to arm, you and yours need to know what they're doing at all times and have respect for the weapon.
What it pretty much comes down to is this: Don't point a gun at anything you don't intend to kill/destroy.
The flip side of that is don't walk/position yourself in front of a gun, even if you 'know' it's empty.
Yeah I saw that and pointed it out to the wife. She pointed out that I had a lot more life insurance than she does. I pointed out that the kitchen was pretty messy and that I needed my laundry done. We glared at each other for about 15 minutes and then both of us backed out of the room.
My dad was (is) an avid hunter and taught me respect for guns. I took a gun safety course when I turned 16 so I could go hunting with him.
