How Deaf Are You?

Word of advice: Do not take this test seriously.

First of, human hearing range is between 16 Hz and 20 kHz. For humans, 21 kHz is impossible to hear unless your speakers can reproduce sound intensity of more than 200 dB, which means you would have permanent hearing damage after hearing this frequency of sound.

Those who claim that they can hear these types of frequency are probably hearing things in their head or think that they can hear it.

Second, turn up your volume on speakers all the way. Those who didn't hear anything above 15 kHz are probably those who had their volume adjusted to normal level, probably below 40 dB. For mid-range sound frequencies (usually 2-5kHz - sounds that phone registers) sound intensity can be as low as 1 dB to hear, while sound frequencies of 16 kHz you have to have sound intensity of at least 20 dB.

This graph can help you understand what I'm saying:

17 for me. (32yo) although I detected 18 if that makes sense? A change in the air or something.

EDIT: I can't wait to try this out on my 7 year old when he gets home from school.

I hate when a TV is on w/o a cable box and you hear that super high pitched sound - not sure it might be 18 or 19 (that's as high as I can get)

I thought I had pretty good ears cuz nobody else can hear it when the TV is on

I know exactly what your talking about. I can walk into the house and tell that someone left the tv "on" (even though the screen is off and the dvr is paused) because of that high pitched hum.

That's the sound of 15750 Hz.

When I turn my speakers to max volume I can hear them all. So what volume are my speakers allowed to be at for this to be scientific? I'm confused...

You don't have to be dumb to be wrong, Maitiu. I'm not saying you didn't heard sounds. I'm just saying you didn't hear 21 kHz ones. You can't hear those in normal enviroment. You have to have special equipment to produce those sounds.

If you are positive that there was a change of sound, that's probably because those high 21 kHz frequency sounds got mixed up with lower frequency sounds.

detta: check out the chart I posted earlier. To produce 21 kHz ones you have to have really really powerful speakers.

@fixie: Whoops, missed your first post. Well I guess my speakers are super-powerful then. *admires speakers*

Strange, but I can hear all of them. Could be because I took the test with headphones.

I'm 20.

I thought I was a rare breed, I use to do this all the time. You go over to the electronics section in a store when younger and I'd go crazy because I could hear the high pitched hums of the tvs with their volume down.

Not the same effect with newer tv's though.

Anyways I made it to 21 with in ear headphones. One person argues you can't hear 21 but I sure as hell heard some kind of low hum.

18 and heard up to 20kHz, felt 21kHz, but can't hear anything else due to my roommates music. I'm sure I can hear 22kHz.

I think the test is fucked - I heard all of the tones and I'm twice the age of most of you and running the el-cheapo speakers that came with my Dell. No way I could really hear 20k + at my age on these $5 speakers. I probably couldn't even hear 22kz on my Vandersteens in the music room.

You guys are making me feel like an old man. I am 21 and only got up to 16 with an isolation headphone.

ooo...that sounded so swanky I just had to look it up and i found

this <-dickroll safety on

Now i'm kinda peeved I missed this whole audio section of ces...

Oh, and i can only hear 16kz and i'm 32. Damn that rock music! and that Getto Bass!
