I've read so many different points of view on the idea of over-population, I'm pretty sure there's a study with supporting argument for any angle you want to look at it. But the one I like to believe in showed that the planet can support 200 billion people. I don't care to see what things will be like with that many people, but wow.

I think it's disturbing that people are talking about food crises happening around the world while the US government STILL buys up and burns crops to artificially inflate prices. And so many other fertile parts of the world are either controlled by dictators who make a farming lifestyle nearly impossible, or are protected by preservation acts. Land which would not be negatively affected by sustainable farming.

Of course, that argument usually fails to consider the sections of amazingly fertile land that either isn't being used, or is being used very inefficiently (ie, a good chunk of Africa). Say what you will about British imperialism, but at least they knew how to manage their farms.

agreed, I've heard that bullshit carry capacity argument before... that there are already too many people and we've exceeded the lands capacity to support us... utter nonsense...

in reality, more efficient agriculture could easily double or triple food production with existing land resources... not to mention the potential of GM crops to vastly increase yields and nutritional content...

we haven't even started to colonize or farm the oceans intensively, factoring that in, our planet could probably support well over 100 billion people, maybe even over a trillion with future technological advancements...

as guerilla pointed out, more population is generally better... it's our screwed up social system that has caused the present set of problems...
 
There are vast, vast tracts of unused land that can support population.

The problem isn't food production, it's food distribution.

ding ding ding.... its better to fix the crack when its small then to let it go and spread... cause you know what happens then.... you have to get a whole new windshield.

There's actually a movement to mandate population control until the world is down to 500 million. They don't really suggest how to accomplish this, just that it needs to be done.

For some reason those people don't respond well to the suggestion of being proactive by offing themselves. Selfish bastards.
