Listen up you fuckwads - You cannot use an open wireless access point and expect any sort of privacy. If I can connect, I can sniff your traffic and pull all of your passwords, see your browsing activity, etc. Along those lines, even if you're using WEP, I can crack that shit in under 10 minutes. It's not secure, don't fucking use it.
If you insist on using a public access point and need security
You need to create a VPN tunnel between yourself and your home network. It's a piece of cake - All you need is your own server or even a router that supports VPN functionality. Set that shit up you're reasonably safe.
If you have your own wireless network
Don't leave it open you dumb shit. Don't use WEP either. At the very least, use WPA-PSK (that's Pre-shared Key). If it's available, use WPA2 with AES. If you're really paranoid, setup a RADIUS box so you can use WPA2 Enterprise, or pay someone to do it for you (really not that hard to do). Turn off SSID broadcasting. Enable MAC address filtering.
Other tips
Turn off your fucking Bluetooth when you're not using it. Bluetooth is about as hard to crack as WEP - That is, it isn't. If your phone has its Bluetooth radio on all day, and it accepts every incomming connection like some drunk sorority girl, I can steal your contacts, text messages, and even make calls using your phone. Shut that shit off or at least disable auto-pairing.
Any script kiddie with a compatible wireless card and a pringles cantenna can steal all of your shit in the time it takes for you to get your venti soy peppermint latte. If you have some free time, give it a try - Use Backtrack, stick it on a bootable thumb drive, and head over to the nearest Starbucks.
