thanks I've also been looking for some flying headphones all I have is some noise canceling earbuds. anyone have a good recommendation for a smaller more compact pair?

If you intend to use them for gaming, get some Plantronics 777.
They've got multiple speakers in the cups to simulate front and rear directional sound, not just side to side.

Picked these up last week and I love them. +1 for anyone looking for a gaming headset and doesn't want to spend $300.

My Sennheiser's aren't noise cancelling, but the sound is incredible. I'd test some out if I were you.
I originally had the Sennheiser PX200 (non-noise cancelling) that had awesome sound quality, so I bought the PXC300 noise cancelling model, but it doesn't deliver the same sound quality that the cheaper, non-noise cancelling model does. Compared to the Bose QC2, it doesn't cause the same feeling of pressure in my ears, which is the major reason I'm not a fan of the Bose.

Instead of actually getting active noise canceling headphones, I'd recommend the Etymotic ER-6i Isolator ear buds. The CNET review says "We judged their effectiveness to be the equal of active or battery-powered noise-canceling headphones." I used them the other day on a flight comparing them to my Sennheiser PXC300 headphones, and they both did wonders for noise cancellation, but the Etymotic ear buds had better sound to them, and much better bass response.

noise cancelling aside (although they won the test in the video) - sennheissers sound incredible!

Bose are alright, but its colored sound. They eq the shit out of the output and tune their speakers, which gives it the Bose sound. Although it sounds alright in some instances, you don't want Bose as your only music output reference.
