Vegetarians

There's a fantastic vegetarian Buddhist restaurant in Vancouver that is one of my favorite places for lunch. Completely vegan, no eggs, no honey, etc. Their hot and sour soup is amazing. They do about half a dozen faux meats made from wheat glutton, simulated sweet and sour pork has cashew in it, bbq duck, and others. Their tarot rolls are one of my favorite things on the menu, like mini cinnamon rolls deep fried and served with a plum sauce.

I miss that place. I also miss the great sushi joints and a place called Rodney's Oyster bar. I miss the food in Vancouver.

That being said, I eat a fair bit of meat, but mostly chicken and a bit of pork. It's always complmented by a ton of fresh vegetable though. I love brocolli and asparagus and just about every other vegetable. I have the occasional steak or other red meat like a beef and vegetable stew, maybe once every two weeks or so. We have a lot of salads with shredded ham or tuna on them. I just generally try to eat a well rounded diet.

My bigger probelm is with booze, I drink way too much. Booze is ridiculously cheap here, a 1 litre bottle of vodka is £6 in Gibraltar and beer is about 40 cents a can. The bars all free pour their cocktails so they are at least doubles, bordering on triples. I need to seriously cut back on my intake.

Cool monkey. He must think he's died and gone to heaven.

By the way - people are supposed to eat animals, that's why they're made of meat ;) Seriously, we are supposed to eat meat, otherwise, we wouldn't have canine teeth. Plus, there are certain amino acids that your body needs that are only available in meat.
I believe that, and have always believed that.

I've just lost my taste for meat, and now that sampunk mentions it, I am drinking way less coffee than I did even 6 months ago.

For a few years, I was doing online 6 hours a day, and working a full time job at 65 hours a week, and smoking 2 packs a day, power lunches at the bar, takeout food at home, drinking tons of pop.

I don't make a lot of smart decisions without fucking up first. I'm kinda impressed with how I have changed my diet without having to make a big deal about it, or ending up in the hospital over it.

Mostly vegetarian here. I eat steak once every few years, chicken a few times a year, and sushi once every few months. No bread, no cheese, no smokes, and haven't had a soft drink since the early 90's.

Ice cream and coffee are my vices. But each day, I drink 150 oz. of water, eat lots of veggies, and put down 35 grams of fiber, so things "move through" pretty quickly. Easy elimination is important to me (sorry if that disgusts anyone). It goes a long way toward my feeling "alive."

Quick side note: "Fit For Life" is a great book for anybody interested in healthy eating, metabolism, etc.

I do not eat red meat, just doesn't appeal to me for some reason. Can't beat a nice bit of chicken or fresh fish though.

"Vegetables are what my food eat"

"We didn't bite, chew and claw our way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables"

I don't think it's natural to be a vegetarian. Really. I don't think humans were meant NOT to eat meat.

That being said, for health benefits try sticking to organic white meats. (no processing, no drugs). I think the whole Caveman Diet thing had it right. Lots of nuts, fruit and...meat.

We're omnivores.

Don't eat a decent balance and you pay some how.

Even red meat is suggested in small amounts.

Almost every vegetarian I've know has a sickly look. Pasty and frail.

mix it up, but less meat than greens.

I don't eat red meat. I eat turkey breast, chicken breast, eggs, loads of tuna and seafood. I will eat red meat on a special ocasion(at a bbq), I just don't buy it myself. I mainly eat veggies, grains and meat is always 2ndary or 3rd, never the main course.

You need good protein otherwise you are going to be on weak, unhealthy, skinny little bitch.

I'm the polar opposite of good and healthy eating. All sorts of bad stuff go into my gut. Very few veggies.

As I get older I'm starting to realize that's not a good thing. For example: red meant (mainly steak - one of my primary food groups) does not like me. I'm not sure what's in red meat that messes with my system, but if I eat a big ass steak, guaranteed my blood sugar will plumment about an hour after. I asked my doctor and he said that's the opposite of what it should do. Apparently, if I understand the doc correctly, when you eat a lot of protein it should raise your blood sugar temporarily. Not me, it drops it. I'm not diabetic (yet) so I don't need to watch my sugars, but I have a blood sugar monitor just to check things when I don't feel right. One time after eating a 20 ounce steak, it dropped to 32 (according to the machine). I thought I was going to pass out. Dizzy, weak, barely move, etc. Called my wife and she had a hard time understanding me. Bad deal.

This doesn't happen with any kind of white meat though.

I really wished I liked more vegatables, but for the most part I can't stand 'em. Makes dieting a bitch.

Put meat in your salad.

I make pasta salad with tuna, red, green and yellow peppers, green onions, celery etc. It's a nice balance. And it's tasty.

Chicken and Shrimp Caesar were my gateways to eating more salad.

If you're not into salad, eat more fruit. Everyone likes fruit. I'm big on apples, pears and melons (sounds like I describing breast shapes :D)

The hardest thing about eating vegetables is getting them back in the wheelchair.
Nice. :evil_laughter:

Part of this might be in how you cook your veggies too. When I met my girlfriend of some 16 years now she really didn't like broccoli and asparagus and even the basics like carrots and whatnot because all her life her mother had boiled the shit out of them leaving them limp, mushy and lifeless.

Since then she's discovered the beauty of a quick stir fry with loads of garlic or ginger and a bit of butter or perhaps oyster or soya sauce, the steamer with herbs, or grilling them on the barbq brushed with a little olive oil and balsamic vinnegar (asparagus, zucchini, red peppers and potatoes go nicely on the barbq). You can make your veggies really tasty with little effort.

I've dated 7 vegetarians/vegans over the past 8-9 years and it was a pain in the ass. Seriously. We could never go out to eat (mainly with the vegans), because "that place isn't vegan friendly".

Anyway, I've tried it, couldn't handle not having meat, and quit.

We're meant to eat wild game, not just meat. The diets of our production animals is absolutely nothing like the diet of wild game and it's horribly bad for us, and the animals.

I've tried the low-carb thing to drop weight, and it works like a charm, but I get to where I really miss the starchy stuff, so I'm finding a balance now. I eat red meat a few times a month. Most of my protein comes from chicken, fish and tofu.

I avoid processed foods like the plague they are.

I've also tried the vegetarian thing many times, but I can't stick with it. It fucks up my blood sugar levels too bad. The spikes and valleys make me cranky and I feel like I can't eat enough to get satisfied. So while I'm not a huge fan of factory farmed meats, I don't really have much choice about eating at least some of it, otherwise I just feel like shit all the time.

I've been looking into the "caveman" diet. Seems very logical and reasonable, but it's almost impossible to follow if you don't have several hours per day to cook and/or shop, and I don't.

As for the vegans, pure vegetarians and frugivores, you might want to consider how we evolved and ask yourself why there are so many "almost-meat" soy based foods. Part of the evolution of our species was needing an assload of calories to feed our giant brains. It's really, REALLY hard to get enough calories to feed your brain (or grow muscle as the body builders will attest) eating nothing but veggies. 4 calories per gram vs. 9 calories per gram for fat/protein.

I've got a buddy who's a vegan body builder. He eats literally until he gags 6-10 times a day. If it wasn't for tofu, I think he'd lose his mind.

Seems easier to me just to pay attention to our evolution and throw in some lean meats, eggs and fish from time to time, but whatever.
