Many years ago I sold unwanted gold & diamond jewelry through a custom jeweler in whom I had confidence. He now only does business "to the trade" and I haven't spoken to him in about 10 years.

I have a few nice pieces (aprox. $3-4k in total value) I'd like to turn into cash, and I'm at a loss. Excluding "cash for gold" affiliate offers, anyone have experence to share on how to sell with confidence that I'm not getting ripped off?

Are you selling any scrap? If so, take it to a refiner on 47th Street or on Canal Street in Chinatown (I go to the one in the back at 72 Bowery). A jeweler will rob you, paying about a third of the scrap value. As for stones, you may be better off selling it on Craig's List. A jeweler will underpay you for stones as well. You may want to get an appraisal, but you'll have to pay for it.

The auction houses on the Upper East Side have walk-in days and they may give you a valuation. I sold a painting at one of the large auction places last year.

Just what I was hoping for, thanks!

I'm closer to 47th street. How to identify a refiner among all the booths?

Does D4G give free appraisals?

Then, if you don't want it, they mail it back.

No, That is just it they won't mail it back. A lot of times they say they didn't get it, or say they already sent it back if they like the item. Or they say they already melted it and send you the $50. Also the insurance is only for $100.

To prove that my gold finding method works, I thought I'd show off what a nice lady sold me today at a yard sale for $3. These measure 3/4", weigh 9.3 grams and are 14k gold, studded with diamonds. A nice haul I think. I have included the requisite spoon.

Should I wear them, or do they look a bit too gangsta?
