Windows 7 RC

This is without a doubt the best version of windows ever, not sure about the best OS, though.

i like to keep beta and other non-final work pretty far away from my work computer and thats why i only installed it on my laptop. that damn thing now runs about an hour longer on battery when compared to vista. insane.. but yeah, best windows os evar.

Ah whatever, can't be bothered to. I'll stick to Windows XP now, who gives a fuck if it has gizmo graphics.

Have any of you running it encountered any software compatibility problems or had trouble with drivers / devices? Seems like every new Windows OS has these issues.

No issues with 7 but vista was a nightmare.

I've had trouble with the latest version of Ventrilo, but I got two releases prior, and it ran fine. Everything else runs like a dream.

I've been able to run everything that is made for Vista just fine. No driver issues and I have an old LPT 1 serial printer HP 710c hooked up to it as well as my USB 2.0 HP 1210. The only glitch I've found is printing in fast draft mode with the HP 1210, it tends to stagger the fonts some. It's fine in all other modes and scanning.

I do seem to have a Ghost in the Machine with my Win7 RC though.

About 3 updates ago it decided to ignore the HOSTS file. I've done thorough scans and can't find anything malicious causing this.

I also get an extra network connection after a reboot from time to time. It's a public connection which of course my firewall blocks and this keeps both the public and my private connection from getting out.

I then have to disable the public connection which also kills my private connection. I then have to tell Win7 to troubleshoot the network and re-establish the network connection. It does and only creates the proper single private connection.

It's an irritation, but as a beta I can deal with it since it is so much faster than my Vista Ultimate. I've only had 2 blue screen re-boots with Win7 in the last 2 months compared to a couple times a week with Vista Ultimate.

Now, if they would do something about that damn bloated & sluggish IE8 I'd be good to go.

had it for 3 days now and all I can say I'm pretty amazed by it... going from XP to 7 is a huge jump.

But I still can't figure out how it can so easily choke up my dual core CPU with only Firefox running. I'm so eagerly waiting for the quad core or I7 laptops with at least half day autonomy...

you can get a one year license free

Except for the small fact that in October these licenses are all set to expire when the product is released in stores.

After that the system will re-start the computer every 2 hours.

Its best to place the RC in a virtual PC and not to install it as your main OS.

Its not the OS thats the issue its Firefox its a huge resource pig especially when you are running multiple add-ons.

i've been using it for a while.. very stable and good for productivity (no laggy menus, quick startup, efficient, WORKS)

Below is what my license said when I installed Win7 RC back in April. It is the beta and not the RC versions that will expire before 2010 if you don't install the RC from what I have read.

Windows 7 RC Will Start Nagging, Auto-Rebooting In March 2010 | Lifehacker Australia

Work Windows 7 RC Will Start Nagging, Auto-Rebooting In March 2010

You might have heard that the Windows 7 Release Candidate would be usable through June 2010—quite the nice free trial. But it starts asking for an upgrade, and automatically rebooting, in March 2010.
That’s from a Microsoft spokesperson, who specifically said that “bi-hourly shutdowns will begin March 1, 2010.” Those shutdowns come without any prompt, unlike the standard restart requests accompany system upgrades. If you’re still using the RC after the drop-dead date of June 1?
On June 1, 2010, if you are still on the Windows 7 RC, your licence for the Windows 7 RC will expire and the non-genuine experience is triggered.

For those lucky enough not to know that that means, it’s a black background, and almost constant reminders that you’re running a copy of Windows that isn’t Genuine.
If you’re still using the Windows 7 Beta that came out in early January, you’ll get the same kind of auto-reboots and upgrade notices on July 1. All in all, don’t plan on using a beta or release candidate of Windows 7 on any system you’re doing actual work on.

I like 7, once you get used to the differences.

The only incompatability I've found so far is dragon naturally speaking 10. It won't install a required file (.net maybe?), but from memory I think this was a 64bit vs 32bit problem, not a xp/vista/7 problem.

right click the installer and click troubleshoot compatability, you can run it in vista mode. This worked for me when i was trying to install AI Suite for my ASUS motherboard, it kept failing with 'unable to install ACPI driver'. Run in compatability mode and BAM works perfect. 32bit stuff should run fine on 64bit win 7.

I used win7 for a few weeks. It works but the only difference I noticed between 7 and XP is that when you turn on the Windows Classic theme, the borders of every app become thick and ugly.

Last version of Windows I used was XP before SP2 came out, so maybe it got so shitty afterwards that windows7 reverted back and suddenly it feels like a new OS.

Probably the best Windows OS but overrated nevertheless.

I installed the RC about a week ago, and I love it. Best windows OS by far. I do agree that it seems to make my system slower overall, but I'm sure that it's because all the drivers aren't fully fixed and updated yet. Once the full release comes out it should perform better. Also I need a new PC, this one is a 5 yr old P4.

im running win7 been for a couple months n ow and its way way way better than vista which was what i was running and it has sped up my workflow tremendously all in all pretty great so far
