Is it possible to have AdSense appear in a pop-up on your site next to relevant text/photos? I would guess this would violate their TOS, but u never know.

Yes, it's against their TOS to have adsense within a pop-up.
"No Google ad or Google search box may be displayed on any domain parking websites, pop-ups, pop-unders, or in any email."

On a related note: Adsense won't show up in ebooks. I tried compiling html pages into an ebook. Most of the elements show up except for the Adsense tables.
