How shady is this?

I did, but I have no clue how they could find out through my lander it was me. I have whois privacy on, the contact form goes to an LP specific email address, etc.
Hot damn, wanna shoot me a PM telling me which domain that is? All of mine have privacy settings on so I think I need to talk to my registrar.
Edit: If that's my 3mb one in my sig, I don't advertise that one anywhere. I mostly just use it as a personal image host.
I think the AM either doesn't know what really happened and was just given your name to recruit. Realistically, if THEY clicked on a link, it would be their own IP they'd see, not yours. Not surprising they wouldn't find a matching pub.
How they probably got your name is that they were looking at referring URL's on the offer, saw yours. They then did a WHOIS lookup on your link/site, tried to find a match in their system and didn't find one.
Since you were already indirectly running their offer, they figured they'd cut out the broker and get you on the offer directly - giving you a higher CPA rate.
My guess anyway.

I know for a fact any domain I have that is promoting an offer is on whois privacy. I do own a lot of other domains I've been trying to unload that I didn't bother with whois privacy, but they have no content.
If the sites were hosted on the same IP then they could do a reverse lookup for all domains on that IP and if any of them had non-private whois they could assume it's you since most affiliates have their own server/IP.
Nothing really freaky about it. It's just like cold calling in the business world.

John - I don't think it is shady at all by the network. They are just doing there research like you do yours. And I wouldn't worry about the info the Shady pulled on you. He does things that most folks can't access. Taint shit you can do about that.
Good point. I just found it weird, but he did say the word "clicked" which is what set me off originally.
All affiliate networks click your ads. If they say they don't they are lying, guaranteed. They call it "scouting" or "researching" but basically it's just costing us money and increasing the number of junk mail messages we get a day.

I don't think it's too shady. It may be unethical somewhat but if it is a network that has a history of paying and can give you a lot better payout then split test and go on.
