Beating the dead horse: Trying to kill IE6

Course the way I see it, is that corporations probably won't bother for two reasons.

1) Once an in house app is created, they usually stick to it til it can no longer work.
2) Most companies don't want you browsing the sites that would have the issues to begin with. :p

You're right. Corporations and Govt agencies don't bother because they have massive infrastructure with slow as fuck update cycles. Security issues, should they arise, can be dealt with efficiently. These are the kinds of places where your email and web activity is monitored and where most are prohibited from surfing anyway. Our customers aren't likely coming from these places, but there's still a % that can't be ignored.

The second scenario of course are people who are using pirated copies of Windows. Windows update doesn't work for them with the whole Genuine Advantage thing MS is pushing these days so they never get told to update to IE7 or now IE8. This group is, unfortunately, where a good deal of customers might come from as there are probably more illegal copies of Windows being run that legit copies, especially in developing countries.

Alrite?
So we should design for new browsers when 75%+ still use ie6 (estimate)

You're not very good at estimates and should avoid pulling numbers out of your ass. MS hasn't had a huge advantage in the browser market share for ages. FF is king and constantly gaining, currently estimated at 47.9%. All versions of IE add up to 39.4% with IE6 making up 14.4%.

Browser Statistics

Hell if I had a site with the drive of Diggs, Youtube, MySpace, Twitter, etc. The ball would be in my court as to what browser is provided since people tend to want those services, and forcing the IE6 base to upgrade or switch would then be easier. But a landing page, they just say cya and don't turn back.

Exactly. Determining the browser you want to support all comes down to what kind of site you are designing. There's absolutely no reason why you can't get simple landing page designs to work in IE6 with pixel perfect results. Once you've learned about the half dozen or so major CSS design bugs that plague that browser, identifying them and squashing them is child's play.

That's surprising. I hadn't looked the numbers in awhile, but I thought FF was still in the 35% area or so.

It comes down to companies spending disproportionate amounts of resources to cater to a small and diminishing user base. It doesn't make financial sense to do it.
Perhaps it makes sense financially in the sense, that the dumbasses who are still on IE6 are prolly the same people ordering blue berry pills on the regular.

The problem here is that most people don't even know what a browser is. They call their browser their "internet." Just redirect all IE6 users to makemoniesonline. Problem solved. Only a porno virus scare would get the average user to voluntarily do a browser upgrade, once they realize they can't get any AV to "remove" it.

This idea rocks^^^

Seriously? They had that genuine advantage shit hacked over 5 years now any pirated copy you download (less you're complete idiot at finding the right one) are pre-cracked, pre-activated, and easily pass any validation needed to run windows update all the way up to SP3.

The only batch of people who run pirated copies that can't upgrade are likely people totally unaware of what piracy even means and probably had some 10 year old nephew install it for them at the time, and just had it ever since.

you can't use the internet without an internet connection. you cant see websites without ... an internet connection and a browser of some sort.

you can't see THIS website without... an internet connection and a specific browser.
