I don't ever post on WF or read it normally. Only started recently to read up on all the FTC and AG crap that is going down (and that will come in the near future). All I can say as far as my credentials is that I'm usually always in the top 3 in spend for Adsonar Advertisers. So here's my answer to your question...
1. You never made money because you copied the person exactly. I can't tell you how many times I've copied an lp, ran the same ad copy as the other person, and in the end I went with something different whether it be ad copy, tweaks to the landing page, etc. to make it work because what I copied didn't work.
2. Adsonar is like chasing a dangling carrot. Just as soon as you figure out a creative that works, it stops working as well. So you probably saw these ads, assumed the person was making money with them. In all reality he might have been losing money on them, but he knows the placement is ultimately profitable once he finds a creative that sticks because he's been working it for awhile.
The problem with adsonar is that its always got a bunch of noobs willing to lose money and everyone rips everyone's lps and what you get is a saturated market and duplicate ads everywhere...even the pros like me deal with crap profit margins while this occurs. Additionally, ad copy goes in and out of fashion very quickly when every page load on an AOL site is "Acai Berry Side Effects." Which leads me to my next point...
3. You could have entered the market at the wrong time when bid prices were inflated. Right now that's occuring bc there is News Site 1...and New Site 2...and News Site 3...and well 10 other "news television sites" running trying to make a living reporting on the acai berry.
A few more pieces of advice for you and whoever reads this post:
-Don't let an Adsonar Rep optimize you account. They aren't any good at it. If you are my ad rep and you are reading this, I'm sorry, but you suck at optimizing my account.
-Realize that on these networks like Adsonar and Pulse, you have some people willing to lose money to ultimately make money. I've seen people drop 30-100k fighting over just a couple of placements...myself included...
-Copying is good, but split testing is better. Most great affiliates don't spend the time to split test thoroughly enough...I can usually take any popular highly run LP and up conversions by 10-15% by just doing a few split tests.
Well I hope this answers your question.
