How do you explain your job to people? (IM)

After doing full time IM now for 6 weeks, I'm finding that it's difficult to explain to people exactly what it is that I do for a living. I end up just telling them that my company builds websites and manages advertising campaigns. I inevitably get asked the question, "hey can you build a website for me, I've got a cool thing I want to do online but I don't know about websites".

Trying to explain affiliate marketing and sales to the average person takes too damn long and I'm pretty sure most end up thinking that I'm just scamming the system. I could give a shit really, since I'm making 5 figures a month at home, while they grind 50+ hour a week jobs.
 


You could tell them that you are a Professional Salesman and use the Internet to advertise the products being sold.


I tell people things along that line, or depending on who it is, I just say that I sell stuff on eBay.
 
i just say i work in internet advertising, and dont really give any more details

its no ones fucking business what i do anyways
 
Them: So, what do you do for a living?

Me: I make websites.

Them: On the internet?

Me: Usually.

Them: Do you make them for companies?

Me: Mostly.

Them: Which companies?

Me: Sorry, I'm not allowed to talk about my clients.

Them: But does it pay well?

Me: No, it really doesn't. I've been at this for 8 years, and I am thinking about going back to school.

Them: Oh, that's too bad.

Me: Yeah, the internet is just a fad. I'm getting out while the getting is good.
 
Advertising. Any mention of websites makes people instantly want to make one for you.
 
I just tell them I do online advertising and get paid a commission for every sale/lead. If they ask for more details I tell them I have advertisements on adwords when they search for certain words.

Pretty simple really.

It is more prestigious and more understandable than trying to explain what it is we/I do.

I see quasi-semi professional poker players lament on this all the time.. I think we have it worse.

The next time I tell someone what I do and they actually understand will be the first.
 
You're a Entrepreneur or Business Owner.

...And when you want to have fun with it, just say your the CEO & President of a major Online Pharmaceutical Operation.

Then they say wtf does that mean? You simply say... "I push pills" and at that point they are so fucking confused the questions will stop.
