As most of you know already:

"Google devoted its home page to the humble barcode today

Many commenters talked of trying to scan the Google logo rendered in “Code 128″ with limited degrees of success – using everything from commercial barcode scanners to cellphone cameras. Others jumped in with conspiracy theories – that barcodes are somehow related to the devil, or would in some future time be used to catalog a society overrun by machines. It’s all pretty fantastic.

Some comments from the masses:

"I thought someone hacked Google at first..LOL"

"the bar code runs off of 6 6 6. the dividing longer bar code that goes from top to bottom are 6’s. the other numbers are shorter or not right to the bottom so you can see the numbers placed under them. the 2 thin lines close together. the first two, the middle two and the last two are 6’s. Just something to consider seeing as the bible predicts the beasts number as 666. Today people are numbered as well as King David was tempted in the old testament in Chronicles to number the people and he was tempted of the devil. After this happened Israel was judged with plague and thousands died in one day. Be warned"

"It gave me a funny feeling when I saw it"

"i am fairly disappointed in Google’s choice of picture for today. It is also the birthday of Niels Bohr today, and I think that the man who helped develop the atomic theory should be commended more than a bar code."

"think it’ll work if i scan it at kmart?"

"guess I was the only one that got pissed off when I saw the bar code. I mean really WTF? To me it represents that all we are reduced to is a number in the eyes of those in power."

"Tell Google that we are not machines. Humans don’t read bar codes"

"I don’t like it and think it is a way for someone else to steal your information"

I'd put this in my sig but I already have a quote there by Sticks79.

the conspiracy theory about the 666 is only partially true and purely mathematical coincidence.

The bars at the beginning and end are 666 but thats a required number for the scanner to know its a barcode and aren't factored into the resulting number. In 4bit BCD binary its 0110 0110 0110 (6|6|6). Another way of looking at it would be sending a 1-1 then 0-0 5 times with a not true for the lead and finish. Those twelve bits are called a sync code. Anytime a computer needs to communicate with a device, piece of input, or another computer it starts sending a sync code, both devices (or the barcode in this case) has to do it in order for their clocks to become in sync and they can start understanding the data coming in. It sends it once then slows its clock down by an incriment and sends it again until it recieves the signal 11 at the same time as sending 11 which means both clocks are at the same timing. It's also why scanners flash the laser at a seemingly random pattern, they're actually just cycling through the different spacing combinations till a single laser flash sends a 1111 and recieves back a 1010 (inverse of 0101) three times. Mathematically that always happens within 12 bits if you logrithmically slow down the clock cycles. Hence the code 666 is used in all digital communication.

So ppl can look at anything digital such as a barcode and see the 666 and be like OMFG THE DEVILZ! But really the scanner just needs to know the size and spacing of the barcode in order to interpret the upc numbers between and those numbers happen to do the trick the most efficiently.

Being able to read barcodes is a neat betting trick though. :)

I think the scariest thing about this thread is that it shows that Roundabout's getting tech news from a religious based media outlet... WTF dude!?

Well to be honest I clicked on the barcode, and Google had only one main link to follow for the explanation, so I just went with it.

No need to fear.

Now, let us bow our heads and pray. Oh Jesus, I am a' callin' for you!

U a mod on a bar code enthusiasts forum as well? :338:

My gf assumed my Macbook was so shitty that it couldn't render the Google image...
