What a bullshit story that was. If she had a modicum of initiative I'm sure she could figure something out, but somehow I don't think that the problem.
Sounds like she went straight from high school into uni, and never actually lived. Now she's doing the things kids do in the years between schools: boyfriends, travel, drinking, etc.
Meanwhile her parents keep asking her "do you know what's next?", "what do you think you will do?" and her brother and sister give her a hard time. Sounds like a real supportive family. I'd tell them to fuck off. I mean, they put the pictures of their daughter meeting the Dali Lama away in the closet. If they were really proud of their daughter wouldn't that sort of thing stay out on display in the house? Dad is partner in an accounting firm so I'm sure he knows a few business owners and could pull a few strings if he wanted to.
Nope, the whole story stinks. Fucked up family from fucked up middle America. A daughter that is more hippy than Wall St. who can't take initiative to do something more... but I don't think that's what she wants anyway. I'm sure with a 5 page article in the Washington Post she'll have no shortage of job offers now. It would be interesting to revisit her 6 months down the road to see if she went on the yoga sabbatical or took some 40k a year cubicle job somewhere just to be away from her parents.
Blech.
What am I thankful for? Thankful to be alive at the moment. Thankful for a supportive girlfriend. If some of the projects I am working on come to fruition I'm sure I'll be thankful for a lot more then.
