Google has been watching affiliates for years. The affiliates are out there making all that affiliate cash, and Google was sitting there collecting data, getting ready to strike.

They started out with their own affiliate network:

Affiliate Network - Google

Now they've got all the data they need, they're removing affiliates from Adwords.

They're now replacing all the old affiliates with their OWN souped up affiliate offers:

Inside AdWords: Announcing Product Listing Ads

You know how mortgage affiliates get paid a crap load of $$ for new leads? Well it would make sense if Google got their share too right?

It's no longer theory. Behold, Google wants to become the largest mortgage affiliate on the planet as well:

Google's Mortgage Comparison Tool; Bank Rankings; GMAC, US Bank, FHA Updates

The mortgage comparision tool is being rolled out so you may not actually be able to see it yet, depending on where you live.

But make no mistake. Google has shareholders who piss and moan if they're not making $$. So Google needs to constantly bring the cheese home.

But to all who thought the share price was going to fall because Google are removing affiliates, think again.

Turns out Google are pulling the biggest screw over EVER...

This has been in the works for awhile. Google has been pulling data from optimizer, analytics, search, toolbar, etc to have the ultimate market research to start selling products affiliate style.

Weird how they only have a few states listed. Mortgages are highly regulated though.
It's interesting to point out the path you provided:

which opens the door for:

hxxps://www.google.com/comparisonads/lifeinsurance

etc...

I'm sure they're going to have trouble with several state banking departments and insurance departments.

this makes sense. much more sense then they are "worried about the end user experience". that's such a pile of shit.

"we want ALL of the money you guys have been making"... now that makes sense and is a billion dollar idea.

I told you guys man, G doesn't play when it comes to $$. It's a money vehicle now, with shareholders and city boys driving it.

G have got someone to answer to, regardless of what they say in their marketing.

Fair play to them. Sure they screw us over, but it's their engine. Funny thing is I bet this is only the beginning - mark my words!

Bing are you listening? Wake up and get everyone on side and you can still cash in by being the good guy!

I agree. We'll be seeing ComparisonAds for every industry soon.

OOOH man I can't wait till they get up the comparison shopping site for handjobs. I've always thought I've been paying too much.

Google is already being eyed up for possible anti-trust lawsuits by the US government and possibly European governments as well. Knowing that, they probably want to cash in as much as they can.

They've also hit a ceiling as to the amount of impressions they can deliver and generate a viable revenue from. Youtube got them a shitload of largely worthless impressions...so they're looking for other ways to make money and affiliates have basically been doing R&D for Google, showing them what works and what doesn't. Funny thing is, Google was getting paid for this R&D rather in the form of PPC charges.

Analytics for free? Woohoo! Oh, wait, now Google knows just about everything it needs to about your business, what you spend on advertising and what you make. Here's to using privately hosted tracking.

What Google is doing is affectionately known as ramming you up the ass...but at least they lubed you up first. :D
