Fed Up with Firefox...What Should I Switch To?

Speed Up Firefox web browser|Ubuntu Geek

Did most of those with my install of v 3.5.5, and there was a noticable speed increase (mine ran smooth before).

Moving from FF means no more addons, which comes down to how much you rely on having your addons (I am reliant on many).

Chrome is pretty damn fast but I personally would never use a G app due to privacy concerns and again you lose FF addons.

Yeah, I did all that awhile back with my ff3.0. It did a lot to speed things up, but nothing to prevent the constant unresponsive thing. I do like all the add-ons and I use a lot of them, but the time I waste rebooting FF constantly or waiting for it to respond is just too much!

Try Iron then. Just downloaded it because of Rage9's link above and no complaints.

Check out their comparison page too.

The main problems I have experienced with FF is after upgrading. On 4 different machines I have had the same issue where once I have upgraded to a newer version, the POS just kept freezing up using all of my available memory. I found that if I first uninstall the older version and new install the updated version, I don't run into this problem.

Sucks, I know but for some reason FF hates being upgraded. I even took a new install of 3.5 and imported my bookmarks into it and then it started doing it again.

This happened on XP Pro SP3 on 4 different physical machines.

I'm not a chrome advocate...but after firefox crashed a little too often, I moved to chrome and haven't looked back

It's worth a shot

It's not reasonable to compare an old installation with a bunch of bookmarks and add-ons vs something you don't use very often. Over time, you only remember the periods of frustration, not the hours and hours of smooth usage.

Firefox *is* a memory hog over time, though, I'll give you that much.

I tried Chrome once, but the tabs on top blew it for me. I use them a lot more than I do the stuff in between, so it is an inconvenience to me.

I got pissed with FF crashing all the time so I started using Chrome more and more. Now what I do is keep one of each open while I'm working. FF for anything I need plugins for and Chrome for everything else.

Hate to have to use more G tools but if you are on a PC it really is the best option right now.

IE is terrible and Opera is what it is.

I'm now in love with Iron.

For those who didn't bother to check out what Iron is, it's Chrome minus the privacy concerns and security problems. SRware used Chrome's open source code to build Iron, stripping away all instances of Google possibly taking more info than they should - check their list here.

All the pros of Chrome (it's an amazingly fast browser), most of the cons removed.

I would like the option to have tabs on bottom instead of top though.

I will be using Iron as my main surfing browser from now on - way faster than FF, and only using FF when I need to use one of my plugins I've become used to (which is often).

wow that's superb...

Does it autofill the address bar for you instantly? That's another feature I like most about chrome

That's a feature of Chrome I don't like. From their privacy policy:

When you type URLs or queries in the address bar, the letters you type are sent to Google so the Suggest feature can automatically recommend terms or URLs you may be looking for. If you choose to share usage statistics with Google and you accept a suggested query or URL, Google Chrome will send that information to Google as well.

Even if you don't have the option to share usage statistics enabled, what you type in the address bar is sent to Google - almost like keylogging. In Chrome you can disable this feature, though it's enabled by default so you would need to go in and disable that.

Iron removed it.
