Remember the "balloon boy" hoax? TMZ's reported that he was just sentenced to 90 days in jail.
UPDATE: Mayumi Heene was sentenced to 20 days in jail for her role, which she'll serve after her husband completes his time.

Richard Heene
-- the moron behind the Balloon Boy hoax -- was just sentenced to 90 days in jail for his role in the October incident.

The judge has allowed Heene to serve 60 of the 90 days on a "work-release program" -- in which he'll be allowed to seek work as a construction contractor while doing his time.

Richard was also ordered to 4 years probation. The judge also imposed a condition forbidding Richard from profiting from the Balloon Boy hoax during the four year period of his probation.

During the hearing, Heene appeared to be choking back tears and he apologized for the incident.

Heene will begin his sentence on January 11, 2010.

Heene's wife, Mayumi, is expected to learn her fate any minute.
I was hoping he would do some real time. These guys just got a slap on the wrist. He's allowed to serve 60 out of the 90 days on a work release program which is fucking stupid. The worst he got was the 4 years of probation and not being able to monetize the hoax during this time.

Sounds fair to me. Jail time is no walk in the park even for a couple of months. Plus he has to pay the fine/costs. He's a dick; but he didn't actually hurt anyone.

Meh, like praxus said, they are going to be on the hook for the cost of the rescue effort, and nobody was hurt. And not being able to sell the story for 4 years is gonna fuck him pretty good, nobody is going to give a shit in 6 months if they don't already so the judge may as well have said they can never profit from the story.

An outrageously light sentence in my book. The guy is batshit insane (if you guys have watched the wife swap episodes, which I implore you to) and should lose custody of his kids. It's these light sentences that inspire all these reality TV wackjobs like the couple that infiltrated the white house.

Just wait till he drops the soap in jail... that'll teach him, from what i've heard.

30 day lockup probably means he'll stay in a county pen, the worst he'll encounter will mostly be drunks, shoplifters he more than likely won't end up re-enacting a scene from American History X

His wife doesn't jackhammer him, but I bet he's going to jackhammer her before he turns himself in for his 30 day (- good behavior + they will likely release him even earlier due to overcrowding) stay in jail.

His wife got some time too. I don't think any of that matters though. All that matters is that he can't make any money from the incident for 4 years and like everyone said- in 4 years, no one will even be able to remember. I wonder how it would apply to him just having a reality show that doesn't talk about the incident? Something completely unrelated? Because you know the media would give him all sorts of coverage and if they linked the incident to him and his reality show, he would have no control. I wonder if the sentence took that into consideration.

I think it's enough: jail time, fines, no money from the event, probably no future job, everyone around you thinks your family is a bunch of douches...What else do you guys want? To cut off a limb?

I think the state could have benefited more if they were like, for the next 4 years the state gets 80% of any deal they make regarding the story. :D, you know... to pay back the emergency staff that were on hand.
