So I've got the perfect spot in my room for an aquarium. 15"x25" available for space. What types of fish do you recommend? Something easy that doesn't take a ton of attention would be good.

That rules out gold fish for sure. You have also ruled out a salt water tank. Maybe go for some African Chichlids or even some neon fish. Make sure you put an algae eater in the tank to eat the growth. If you get Chichlids, they tend to be very aggressive and will rip one another apart if they don't have enough space (territory). Chichlids also like hiding spots so plan on buying those too.

Also, don't skimp on a cheap filter, get a good one.

I had an aquarium setup for a couple of years. I think it was a 45 or 50 gallon. I went through all kinds of damn fish. Stussy is right... I wouldn't go with salt water unless you want to spend a ton of time and money. Although those setups are badass.

Actually, even a setup like I had took a bit of time. You want to keep on top of your water changes or your aquarium ends up looking like crap (change out about 10% of the water every couple of weeks or so). Make sure to get one of those things that you can hook up to your sink because it makes changing water a ton easier. If you do good regular maintenance and throw a couple algae eaters in it it will look nice and clear most of the time.

Oh yeah, get those tester kits because you gotta keep up on the pH of the damn thing or your fish could die (not too difficult). Also a thermometer and heater is necessary for tropical fish (non gold fish) or they will die.

Anyway, I went through quite a few tropical fish and the mollies were probably the ones that lasted the longest. After a while I got sick of tropicals and actually went out and caught a really small sunfish (highly illegal btw) and had that for quite a while. It was really dirty though and hard to keep the tank clean but it was way cooler then the little tropical guys. Some places may have natural fish to your area. That would be something to look into if you get a bigger size tank.

Go saltwater if you want something awesome to look at. A "nano" tank. There are plenty of "all in one" systems that range from 20-30 gallons. I have a 30g Finnex that is great. BioCubes are another popular choice (a little cheaper both in price and quality, but plenty of mods available).

The main thing is you will just have to learn how to take care of it, what you can and can't put in a tank that small, and how to maintain it (mainly just do frequent small water changes). I will post a pic tomorrow if you want ... the lights are out now and most of the fishies are sleeping.

yo man, my mom is a expert on that shit. shes got like a million goldfish - (and she treats/spoils them more than me!)

they get huge, too... shes runs a forum dedicated to anything and everything goldfish..

i don't have one due to the maintence required but i love aquariums. The coolest one i've ever seen is at my insurance company. Nothing special about the tank except its an exact replica of the tank from finding nemo and they have all the same fish in it which makes me lol everytime i walk in.

For the lulz you should be like "*GASP*, It's Nemo!" each time you walk in.

We have several aquariums in the house... can't fucking get rid of them, the wife keeps getting them on freecycle and craigslist cuz people giving em away around here.

We got a large 75 gallon, a long 55 gallon, 30 gallon and 2 20 gallon.

One of the 2 gallon has tree frogs in it, the 55 gallon has two larger aquatic turtles in it, and their rosies (small feeder fish... which they're ignoring). thought bout moving the turtles to the 75Gallon since the red slider is now bout 12 inches in diameter, and using the 55 gal for possibly a Uromastyx. When the weather gets warmer (so I don't haul shit in the cold), I'll probably see if I can get rid of the 2 smaller tanks, or use the 30 gallon for some fresh water fish and maybe snails.
