Best Free Anti Virus Software?

I used to use AVG free and eventually switched to the AVG paid/full network version.

No viruses - no complaints.

I am more secure than most people though.

Got my new netbook and looking around for some good stuff. I've got AVG on some and Avira on another. So far Avira has probably been the best, but the pop up ads from Avira are annoying as hell (yes I know you get what you pay for ) so I was wondering what you guys recommend?

You can disable the Avira popup.

Find avnotify.exe, right click, properties, security, set the read & execute permission to deny for the user/group named system.

Microsoft Security Essentials received good criticism in terms of efficiency and ease of use (and it's free).

Also, common sense and a bit of attention when clicking a link (meatspins have probably taught you that, though), as someone said before are critical when browsing online :)

I've switched to Avira just recently and am so far quite satisfied. I've purchased programs and each has managed to allow intruders into my machine causing format proceedings.

any free Antivirus will do except Norton (it has a free trial option), when Norton find no virus on your system, it will create some to make it look like their crap is useful.

I use the one I got from a popup ad that says "Your computer may have a virus on it, download our new software NOW to fix it."

No complaints, although my computer has been taken away by the police 3 times since I installed it. Not sure if related though.
