How international domain names are going to fuck us all

Imagine a PPC campaign with this:

Аcai.com (cyrillic capital A)

РayРal.com

Вuy.com

all of these use cyrillic in some way

I wonder if any of the TM holders will have a leg to stand on in disputes for these names if they don't cover their ass well enough from the start and others register something that looks like their TM, but in a different alphabet.

I mean its going to be so easy to do some combination of non-roman characters to mimic a TM. Like I said, PPC is going to be great for this.

Spot the cyrillic characters in there.

This is an old trick (ever since they started allowing those characters). I've bought a bunch of interesting domain name lookalikes with cyrillic characters over the last few years. I honestly thought a lot of people here were doing this already too.

Well, it's not so much that they're true unicode characters in domains right now, but browsers are told to interpret them as something else. i.e.:

РayРal.com = xn--ayal-f6dc.com as a browser sees it.
Soon ICANN is allowing true unicode domains, not ones that redirect to roman+numbers.

It also means people who bought unicode domains up until now might be a bit fucked.

IDNs aren't new. I thought this change was for new tlds? Whats the point of being able to type a domain in your language's alphabet if you still need to switch back to type com, net, org.

Email Tina Dam and ask her about it -- she is the director of IDN Program and Ex Miss Denmark. :)
