Someone Told Me The Other Day...

"Her Dad: Why don't you kids go out and get a REAL job?"

Tell him to go tell that to the owner of the company he works for..

He probably wouldn't see the correlation of that, since the OP (to my knowledge) doesn't have a bunch of employees under him (and naturally most people don't see freelancers and contractors as the same thing).

When someone is at that point, its obvious that most rebuttals are just going to go right over their heads. And there's really no sense wasting breath on them explaining it.

Put yourself in their situation, they are probably 9-5 drones and have been their whole lives, always wanting the nicer things in life but could never afford them. Then you come along, the same age as their fucking KID, already having the freedom and resources they have yearned for their whole lives. And you do it in a way that is very intangible, with nothing physical to show for it. So they hate.

Yeah I guess thats true.

On a side note has anyone started to hate a lot of people because of this sort of thing? I get it NON stop living in a smaller town. I used to talk to everyone and be super friendly now im pretty much an asshole to most people due to all negativity towards being successful.

I get constantly get comments like "im going to get a computer and do what you do", real job, ect.. Gets really annoying. I litteraly tell people to shut the fuck up.. lol

Regarding the whole "my-girlfriend-is-a-bitch-because-she-doesnt-like-what-I-do-deal"

WTF?!

Just talk with your gf's for real, let her know what your are doing and why you think its worth it. Its called communication, go read some persuasion books or something or start communicating with her.

My chick has been pretty cool about me taking time learning aff marketing (but she does get a little whiney if the time at the computer at night gets to be excessive on too many consecutive days.) She even turned me onto a niche back in October. She mentioned how her nephew was retarded for little toy hamsters called "zhu zhu pets" and that I should put them on one of "those ebay sites you do". So I bought a domain for 9 bucks and maxed out the postings with Auction 2 Post, paid 5 dollars for some back links, spent an hour submitting some crap to a few wikis and then left it alone. It pulled in $226 in commissions (not ballin but not bad for an hours work) and I then unloaded it on Flippa a week before Christmas for a quick $150 bucks. ROI was 3210% for what was essentially a "why the hell not" experiment, but the money is going to her engagement ring so it's all kind of a wash anyway :)

Deliguy - I can appreciate your predicament.

I started my first company when I was 23. I'm 36 now for the record. That first company is still my "real" job and I spend a ton of time working on it. For my own reasons I've moved into IM/AM and I want that to be my full time gig soon.

I started a company because I was making $14/hr and being billed out as a Junior Consultant at $75/hr. And I was GOOD - better than most senior consultants - and I knew it. So I just dove in head first.

I've flown a LOT to fun places - and mostly not seen them. I've been to Orlando 55 times. I never once set foot in Disney (did see some other stuff). People for some reason assume my lifestyle when I travel is something like this:

-Sleep in until 10:00
-Room service
-Work for an hour
-Go to beach

It's not like that at all. In December of 2009 I billed a customer 191 hours from December 1-15th. That's an AVERAGE of 12+ hours/day, every day - and people just don't see it. They think that I make 6 figures by magically doing nothing.

There is no amount of reasoning or education that can convince people that I make what I do because I a)took risks, and b)worked my ass off.

In my case I have another challenge - the company I am part owner of has other partners (two of them). We also have employees (12 or so). Those two do not work nearly as much time as I do on customer sites. And they also for some reason have the "let's play it safe" mentality. It's a weird sub-set of business owners that get comfortable and are not willing to keep expanding.

If your business is not expanding it's dying - inflation alone will see too that.

So yeah - I get it. But they never will.

Annoys the hell out of me that people can't understand or see what we do is a lot of hard work (although I never feel like its work because I enjoy every minute of it), but at the same time let them think what they want to think that's less competition for me.

My ex used to do the same "when are you gonna get a real job" shit to me all the time even well before I was in affiliate marketing and was doing outside sales. People are so programmed to do the whole go to highschool, go to college, get a job, get married, crank out a few rugrats then get a car payment and mortgage and pretend like you made it until you die lifestyle..

Many people at least understand that I just don't want to work for somebody else my whole life and I'd rather take a shot at something better than settle for being comfortable in a job I fucking hate.

I did go to college but as soon as I started I realized I prolly wasn't going to do shit with it and I actually have some people give me a concerned look when they hear that I've graduated and I'm not working in a job in my field and have no desire to look for one. I currently have a part-time job and am working to do AM full-time. Getting close but not quite there yet..

Sad part is I look at the people who are working in their careers I went to college with and I make a lot more money than they do just working my gay part-time sales job. They still ask me "are you still doing that little website thing"

Oh well fuck em if all they ever aspire too is to be able to afford a monthly payment on an escalade, I can just feel lucky I don't think that way..

Least you don't have to deal with (that I know of) those batch of people who the moment you tell that you either work in affiliate marketing, or work with people who do (ie: me coder, you AM) they immediately associate you with being a mass spammer or scammer.

Funny thing that you guys have going with your wifes / girlfriends.

My wife KNOWS it is my computer skills that keep the monies rolling in.
She is proud of this and would never ever think of changing me as in "ya gotta get away from that box" or somesuch.

Same here. My wife is so stoked that I was able to put my own business together and get the hell out of the car business. She doesn't exactly know the full scope of what I do, but she knows enough that she respects it as a real job. When the checks hit the bank account each month, then she really knows it's not bullshit.

She also works from home, for an insurance agency. She makes 75k a year, but she works her ass off. Dealing with pain in the ass clients, same as I did for 14 years in the car business. She enjoys her work though, and she's happy for me that I'm doing something I enjoy as well.

As for everyone else. I haven't really had anyone say "when are you going to get a real job". When I decided to leave my "real job" and everyone asked what I was doing, I told them I was starting my own company doing internet marketing and advertising. I guess this sounded "legit" enough to them, even though they had no clue what it entailed. So I don't get any flack from anyone, because in their mind, I've given them an answer that is satisfactory. And if anyone has some problem with what I do, then they can fuck themselves. I'm paying the bills around here and taking care of my family.

Let them think whatever the fuck they want. It's their mentality that provides you with a huge base of asleep-at-the-wheel consumers.

It's not internet marketers that have to change. It's everyone else. Just look at them like you could give two shits; look at them like they're the retards(because they are), look at them like they have absolutely no idea of the possibilities.

It's like Bofu2U said; it ain't easy shit. Anybody can do mindless easy shit for a steady minimal check; it takes balls to keep grinding, even when you see NO RESULTS, keep trying different things, until you finally STRIKE GOLD. That shit takes balls. IM, entrepeneurship, being a business owner, etc.. requires a high intensity peak wave of effort in the beginning, and THEN you start to see returns.

9 to 5ers, on the other hand, have low intensity effort waves, but it's like that their whole life. So they sacrifice the riches for the effort.

In other words, a successful IMer who has 5 sites each making 10 grand a month could be viewed as living the easy life, low intensity work, all he has to do is sit back. But nobody sees how long that marketer spent setting up those sites, testing them, optimizing them, trying different templates, SEOing them, PPC tests, discarding some, venturing into other niches, finally maxing them out, until they reached that stage. Most people have ZERO patience to do that kind of high-intensity work shit, which is why they'll never reach the other side of the curve where you can reap the ridiculous rewards.

Just look at them like they're morons. Whenever anyone calls me a nerd, geek, I just call them a moron because computer shit is not tough and anybody could learn it if they really TRIED. They're just too lazy. In 10 years, they'll still be slaving away in their consistently low intensity jobs while we will have already pushed past the highest intensity part of the work and will be on some beach, watching the checks roll in.

Let them think whatever the fuck they want. It's their mentality that provides you with a huge base of asleep-at-the-wheel consumers.

This is true.

The place I used to get my hair cut at had a girl who worked there who'd actually signed up for a re-bill tattoo remover. She was amazed when I told her the person who'd sold it to her probably made somewhere between $15 and $40.

She then went on to exclaim "Wow, you mean I could make like $100 more a month if I sold stuff online?".

It's a matter of imagination and scope. I'm willing to bet everyone on here has an above-average risk tolerance and willingness to believe/imagine what is possible.

I think many of you might enjoy this letter

To All My Valued Employees,

There have been some rumblings around the office about the future of this company, and more specifically, your job. As you know, the economy has changed for the worse and presents many challenges. However, the good news is this: The economy doesn't pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is the changing political landscape in this country.

However, let me tell you some little tidbits of fact which might help you decide what is in your best interests.

First, while it is easy to spew rhetoric that casts employers against employees, you have to understand that for every business owner there is a Back Story. This back story is often neglected and overshadowed by what you see and hear. Sure, you see me park my Mercedes outside. You've seen my big home at last year’s Christmas party. I'm sure; all these flashy icons of luxury conjure up some idealized thoughts about my life.

However, what you don't see is the BACK STORY:

I started this company 28 years ago. At that time, I lived in a 300 square foot studio apartment for 3 years. My entire living apartment was converted into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building a company, which by the way, would eventually employ you.

My diet consisted of Oodles of noodles because every dollar I spent went back into this company. I drove a rusty Toyota Corolla with a defective transmission. I didn't have time to date. Often times, I stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In fact, I was married to my business -- hard work, discipline, and sacrifice.

Meanwhile, my friends got jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a modest $50K a year and spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. Instead of hitting the Nordstrom's for the latest hot fashion item, I was trolling through the discount store extracting any clothing item that didn't look like it was birthed in the 70's. My friends refinanced their mortgages and lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I put my time, my money, and my life into a business with a vision that eventually, some day, I too, will be able to afford these luxuries my friends supposedly had.

So, while you physically arrive at the office at 9 am, mentally check in at about noon, and then leave at 5 pm, I don't. There is no "off" button for me. When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend all to yourself. I unfortunately do not have that freedom. I eat and breathe this company every minute of the day. There is no rest. There is no weekend. There is no happy hour. Every day this business is attached to my hip like a 1 year old special-needs child. You, of course, only see the fruits of that garden -- the nice house, the Mercedes, the vacations... you never realize the Back Story and the sacrifices I've made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and I, the guy that made all the right decisions and saved his money, have to bail-out all the people who didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed a decade of my life for.

Yes, business ownership has is benefits but the price I've paid is steep and not without wounds.

Unfortunately, the cost of running this business, and employing you, is starting to eclipse the threshold of marginal benefit and let me tell you why:

I am being taxed to death and the government thinks I don't pay enough. I have state taxes. Federal taxes. Property taxes. Sales and use taxes . Payroll taxes. Workers compensation taxes. Unemployment taxes. Taxes on taxes. I have to hire a tax man to manage all these taxes and then guess what? I have to pay taxes for employing him. Government mandates and regulations and all the accounting that goes with it, now occupy most of my time. On Oct 15th, I wrote a check to the US Treasury for $288,000 for quarterly taxes. You know what my "stimulus" check was? Zero.. Nada. Zilch.

The question I have is this: Who is stimulating the economy? Me, the guy who has provided 14 people good paying jobs and serves over 2,200,000 people per year with a flourishing business? Or, the single mother sitting at home pregnant with her fourth child waiting for her next welfare check? Obviously, government feels the latter is the economic stimulus of this country.

The fact is, if I deducted (Read: Stole) 50% of your paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? That's nuts. Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, I agree which is why your job is in jeopardy.

Here is what many of you don't understand ... to stimulate the economy you need to stimulate what runs the economy. Had suddenly government mandated to me that I didn't need to pay taxes, guess what? Instead of depositing that $288,000 into the Washington black-hole, I would have spent it, hired more employees, and generated substantial economic growth. My employees would have enjoyed the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries. But you can forget it now.

When you have a comatose man on the verge of death, you don't defibrillate and shock his thumb thinking that will bring him back to life, do you? Or, do you defibrillate his heart? Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate it, not kill it. Suddenly, the power brokers in Washington believe the poor of America are the essential drivers of the American economic engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change you can keep..

So where am I going with all this?

It's quite simple.

If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, my reaction will be swift and simple. I'll fire you. I'll fire your co-workers. You can then plead with the government to pay for your mortgage, your SUV, and your child's future. Frankly, it isn't my problem anymore.

Then, I will close this company down, move to another country, and retire. You see, I'm done. I'm done with a country that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, will be my citizenship.

So, if you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the economy; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country, steamrolled the constitution, and will have changed its landscape forever. If that happens, you can find me sitting on a beach, retired, and with no employees to worry about....

Signed,

Thom

Your Boss

Moms is obviously being sarcastic since pops can't afford a decent car for his daughter working his shitty 9-5 ... that was a stab at him. Sounds like a cool MILF

Pops is bitter because his wife is fucking the milkman since he's too inept at life to do shit for himself.

lol erect nailed it you just didn't catch it and responded funny as a result

Most people in the older generations (baby boomers and older) think of work as a steady 9 to 5 with good benefits and "job security" although why the fuck you would think you've got job security when your boss can fire you whenever he feels like it is beside me.

Trying to convince these people that they're wrong is probably a waste of time.. and pretty hard because at the moment if you're not doing well then they've "got a point" even though if everyone followed their terrible advice, we'd have no google, no startups, no great musicians that toiled for years before making it, etc.

Best bet is to surround yourself with like-minded people that have been through the struggle of starting a business or are in the midst of it right now. A lot of times aspiring actors, artists, musicians, etc. are in the same boat and will be more understanding too.

As for your girl nagging on you for not making enough money, you're never going to win her respect by giving up what you want to do and trying to please her. Best to kick her ass out. Better now when you're poor than when you've made your millions!

You gotta do what you want for your reasons, not to prove some point to old retarded people or bitchy girls.
