I had a nice job for the past 8 years. It was nice and cozy, and I thought I had a real future with this large company. But, my job was suddenly eliminated today. Actually, my bosses job was eliminated so he took my position in order to stay with the company.

I dont understand the mentality of the Democrats in congress and the White House. Once they see that they cant get Health Care passed due to that election last week, Obama decides he is going to tackle jobs. Come on! Are you serious? You wait till you cant get what you want before you start dealing with the important things. ( I also lost my families health insurance, but I am still against gov't healthcare.)

Here is what I dont understand. It seems that the only thing jobs related coming out of congress for the last year is tax the rich and tax business owners. I am neither. I am just a middle class American, but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see the folly in this thinking.

Shouldnt government be lowering taxes on the rich and businesses? It seems like the best way to grow an economy is to give the people with the money an incentive to invest and spend that money, thus causing the economy to grow. I know I am just a middle class nobody, so I am probably just uninformed, but alot of people are losing their jobs and lifestyles due to the ignorance of Democrats in control of the country.

Cut Capitol Gains taxes so rich will invest. Cut taxes on small businesses so owners can grow their businesses. Small business owners do not need capitol gains tax cuts. They generally do not pay those taxes.

Anyway, now I am a victim of this freakin economy. I have no job, no health insurance for the family, and life is going to suck really bad before for a long for me. And I see a lot more people meeting the same fate as me if our leadership doesnt get out of the way with their high taxes and regulations.

I am a little lucky. I saved up around $4K from my writing services over the past 6 months. I never could keep steady work. It was hit and miss. I was using that money to test Facebook (finally). I started a thread in the Newbie section about it. I never made a conversion, but I didnt test a lot.

Now, I dont know what to do. Continue to test Facebook and risk losing my savings (that wasnt my savings - until today that was my play money), or stop and live off this $4K as long as I can. I have only spent about $200 in testing, but I havent made a conversion.

So, discuss the tax issue, and offer me some advice on what to continue to do in regards to testing Facebook.

Thanks

what was your job?
sorry to hear that man

i just graduated college and got offered a really nice job so im pretty grateful because I hear stories like this allll the time

First off, I'm sorry to hear that you lost your job. I would be setting up unemployment ASAP. Second off, I wouldn't be throwing the only money I had left into testing a Facebook campaign. If I were you, I would collect unemployment and head over the BST section and start writing my balls off until you can find steady work.

After you have found and secured your next job, I would continue on your path of internet marketing until you can reach a point where you can sustain it full time. Until then, look out for your family man. I would be shelling money out on the mortgage right away. They can take my cars, cut my water, electricity or whatever they have to do. As long as I can maintain a roof over my family I'm golden.

EDIT: I almost forgot to talk about the tax issue. I fully agree. It obviously does not make sense to tax the hell out of companies. A lot of people think Reaganomics is bullshit. The middle class are the ones who end up bending over most of the time. Once a company gets taxed to death, they of course have to hand that down to the consumer. Thank God the dems are going to have a hard time ram rodding their little cap and trade plan through now.

Similar thing happened to me 3 years ago. Walked into my 6 figure+ a year job only to find out that we were closing down.

Best fucking thing that ever happened to me.

The wrong party is in power for that kind of policy direction.

Why not put the Facebook stuff on hold for a bit and double down on the writing and maybe start with some SEO stuff until you find another job?

Good luck dude.

Thanks for your response. I did apply for unemployment. In my state, it is only $250 per week. As far as thinking about my family. I thought I was by trying to learn PPC. It seems like that is the best way to become financially independent. I am not a newbie to affiliate marketing, just PPC/Facebook. However, I sold all my sites to get some extra money in the bank so it would be a slow process to get an income coming back in.

I wish I could fathom that mindset. I am freaked out, bad.

I would agree with the others and say that you should buckle down on writing and get your unemployment going. $4000 is a good base to get started - but the way you said it you can't really use that money for affiliate marketing exclusively.

I always need writers for tons of various sites so shoot me a message on AIM if you need work.

Dude... Facebook fuckin sucks man unless you use it to advertise something legitimate and different (i.e. Photoshop Repair & Red Eye Removal services). Good luck trying to use it direct link to CPA offers.

Sorry to hear about your job. I'd recommend going the SEO route for niche offers. Check out MarketHealth

OK, so Facebook is out. I am surprised. I thought a lot of the heavy hitters here are heavy hitters because they took risk with the PPC game.

I am lucky in that over the past two years, I eliminated ALL credit card debt and paid off a car. I really only need around $2000 a month to live since I eliminated so much debt. I got lucky there. So at .02 cents per word, I would need to write 200 articles per month (500 words). i now have the time, but finding that much work at that rate has not worked out in the past.

Get into copywriting full-time, launch a blog about something you are genuinely interested in and that pays well, write quality content for this blog, promote. This way you'll slowly switch to writing for yourself only when the blog(s) start bringing some income.

Sorry to hear about your job man. I think what everyone above is trying to say is that you should not put your last $4k into testing PPC if you have a family to support and no job right now. It would be a risk that you really can't make in the position that you are in right now. Writing full time will bring you some steady cash and once you build that income up you could slowly start using small amounts to test campaigns until you hit a winner. Even then, it will be a rollercoaster so you will constantly need to keep putting money into testing that you can not expect to be a winner especially if you are just starting in PPC.

What kind of workplace/business skills do you have?
Like I said I'm a recent college grad, and I've found LinkedIn to be invaluable so far...in fact, I just put in a two week notice @ my job because a company down the road found me on LinkedIn and made an offer I couldnt really refuse.

I agree w/ everyone else too abt the holding off on PPC too

Obama's fucked up metality strikes again...

Is looking for another job an option? Did you like what you used to do?

I personally failed, and failed, and failed until I finally hit it big and started expanding...with only 4 grand and a family to take care of don't try testing big time because you will fail a few times before hitting it big.

This may seem a little OT but pick up Cashvertising and/or Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion and read them. There's a lot of that you can apply to looking for a new job. If you live in a bigger city there are jobs out there, jobs you can get, you just have to clean up and impress them.

Pick a company you'd like to work at and that seems like a good fit for you - be realistic. Whether hiring or not find out the contact info of the owner, assuming he lives in your town, and write a hand written letter and drop it in his mailbox.

Use what you learned in the books to persuade him, make it different. Personalize it by adding something he likes - do your research.

99% of people apply online with generic resumes or drop of the same old resume to the secretary at the office. It doesn't take much to be different. In Donald's book The Art Of The Deal and Think Like A Champion he mentions repeatedly it's not what on the paper that impresses him it's what's beneath the suit.

The last half of grade 12 you do a thing called co-op where you go and work in a field you think you'd be interested in. I wanted to get into this law firm but they denied me because they have never taken students before - and "weren't going to start now".

I found out the home address a partner in the firm and knew he loved cars so I went on eBay and bought him a ticket to the Toronto car show which cost like $100 bucks. When I got it I wrote a nice note to him explaining how I was different and why I keep persiting and put the ticket in the envelope.

I got the internship and quickly decided law wasn't right for me - but none the less I learned a lot and I still call him up whenever I need legal advice.

They still don't accept interns - the only reason I got in was because I persisted and tried. You won't get anywhere without trying and persisting and being different.

View every failure as a stepping stone. If you want find a spot where you'd like to work, find out what position you want, and be creative. You may get denied a few times, a few people may not bite but trust me someone will.

This works best with small/medium business' that are only in your city. You want the owner to have an attachment to the city and to live there. PM me anytime if you want to try it out. It will work. Promise. ;)

Good luck.

I know it may not be easy for you right now, however you have to decide on the way you're going to face the reality.

First off, look at what you concentrate on
I have no job, no health insurance for the family, and life is going to suck really bad before for a long for me.
Do you plan it? What if there is a way to get another job or get somebody to buy your writing services?

I know I am just a middle class nobody, so I am probably just uninformed
Raise your fucking self esteem!

Anyway, now I am a victim of this freakin economy.
You're not a victim, you just have to take the responsibility back. And fuck the gov, why do you want to know more about these stupid taxes?

Concentrate on finding clients for your writing services or finding another job instead.
I wouldn't recommend investing in PPC if these $4k is the last money you have, because without experience you'll lose it. You probably have some bills to pay.
And yeah I also don't like these taxes but there's nothing we can do about it.

So my advice - sell your writing services and keep looking for another job even if it's going to be flipping burgers - as Mr. Chi-City says "don't get mad, get paid".
And wish you good luck, even though you don't really need it.

As someone else said, look into building one hell of an SEO site. Find a decentish paying niche and stick some contextual ads in there. Basically, fill your time with writing whether it's being paid for or not.

The longterm benefit (ie. a few months from now and onwards) should really help. Leave the PPC alone until you again consider the money in your bank account as 'play money'.

PPC is definitely a great way to make money but when you have a family to take care of, you need to prioritize a bit. When I started in affiliate marketing I was going to college, and only had to support myself. It's a lot easier to support yourself then it is a family.

I'm not saying you shouldn't try PPC, or affiliate marketing in general but there are ways you can get work done and drive traffic without PPC. I still love SEO to this day even though I run lots of paid traffic.

You lose YOUR job and its the democrats fault and they aren't doing their job? I know it sucks and all, but pull your head out of the sand man. The unemployment rate has been dropping like a lead balloon for well over a year, affecting millions. Look to the banks and lenders, wall street and the Bush administration if you want some root cause.
