YouTube Blog: Broadcast Yourself

"For years, Viacom continuously and secretly uploaded its content to YouTube, even while publicly complaining about its presence there. It hired no fewer than 18 different marketing agencies to upload its content to the site. It deliberately "roughed up" the videos to make them look stolen or leaked. It opened YouTube accounts using phony email addresses. It even sent employees to Kinko's to upload clips from computers that couldn't be traced to Viacom. And in an effort to promote its own shows, as a matter of company policy Viacom routinely left up clips from shows that had been uploaded to YouTube by ordinary users. "

wow.

That has got to be the most retarded thing I have ever heard. Jesus christ I fucking hate people & companies who sue frivolously like that. Total fail that they got caught too LOL

While the YT guys may have an argument, you should read this article before making any judgments:

YouTube-Viacom, Part Two: YouTube Founders’ E-Mails Show Struggles Over Copyrighted Works | paidContent

YT is just another company who made a shitload of money off of someone else's hard work.

Steal this movie: Clearly, Chen’s worries only went so far. In a July 29, 2005 e-mail about competing video websites, he wrote to Hurley and Karim, “Steal it!” To which Hurley responded: “Hmm, steal the movies?” Chen replìed: “We have to keep in mind that we need to attract traffic. How much traffic will we get from personal videos? Remember, the only reason why our traffic surged was due to a video of this type. . . . viral videos will tend to be THOSE type of videos.
Who's being hypocritical now?

Who's being hypocritical now?

Not really hypocritical in this sense, since viacom uploaded their own content and by the TOS they've authorized youtube to distribute it.

But also with the number of contents posted they can't possibly check every single one of them, and will likely only act as they come across it or when they respond to visitors reporting them.

It seems like what happened is they notified Viacom of the publications, and Viacom just didn't respond or overlooked it.

In any case, viacom was just stupid.

What a bunch of retards. If they wanted to upload their shit but maintain the facade of it being illegally uploaded to give themselves control over exactly how long it stayed up, etc. they could have coordinated that with Youtube. Instead they sue them and piss off the biggest force on the internet. Smart!

Cuz then they'd have to pay youtube, not the other way around.
