What is fair to charge a family member for something like this?

I don't say too much here, but I am definitely with the camp that says don't work with family and if you must-free is by far the best answer. If you are successful most family will be very grateful for the expertise that you lend. Conversely if it doesn't go as planned and you were to charge them they will feel bitter. It's just the nature of the beast. Better to keep peace in the family. That's just my 2 cents.

Oh and I'm with FTC-Hater, this seems really odd how do you just happen to find this particular thread with 50+ billion indexed pages on the web? I guess it could happen but I'd play the lottery with unlikely odds like that rollin up on you

B~

I charge everyone. "Family" is a vague term any way. Is this your dad or your uncle's boyfriend's cousin? How much $$$ does it make them? How much money do you make without it? If I help someone else make a shitload of money, they pay me.

Charge 10 times what you would normally charge. Family is going to expect ten times more than any client.

As others have said - free for family is best & builds brownie points.

But if you still want to consider reasonable moneys for the work, then perhaps do it as a cost per lead. Get another phone number specifically for the website (and any other promoting you do) that rings at their office - or whatever - and earn commission for each successful sale.

So if you rock it, you'll both profit. And if you tank then your family member isn't out any money.

if this is a relatively simple project, then do it for free.

If not, then relay to him that you do this for a leaving and need to be paid. Charge him as you would any other customer and be on an understanding that he will be treated as any other customer, and this will not effect the relationship at all. Unless your work sucks, you should have no issues

This thread isn't lacking in entertainment value. I can't figure out if it's a joke, or not. Definitely don't charge family though. If he isn't happy with the results, and starts to complain...your gonna get really pissed, when you have to bend over backwards to make it right. At least if you're doing it to be nice, you can bend over backwards, and not feeling like your not charging him enough - Your being nice, and helping family.

What happens a month or year down the line when his ranking drops? "Hey, I paid you this money and I'm no longer #1"

OR if he doesn't make as much money from it as he thought he would. "I thought you said that SEO was profitable"

Either way if you charge your family just be prepared to give a refund if anything goes even slightly wrong. The longer you try to hang onto your money during a dispute, the worse your relations will get.

If you're still going to price it, charge him exactly the same as you would any other client.

ALSO, do not forget: If you don't charge, and still do the job, their expectations of you will not let up. They will still expect a good job! So either don't do the job, or charge them retail. You don't want to put guilt on yourself for accepting a bullshit deal.

With family you NEVER CHARGE. EVER. Just think of it as a favor because later down the road when you need a favor he will definitely return it. If he doesn't meatspin his website. THE END

80/20 principle applies here. You aren't going to make much and the hassle/time will take away from cash generating activities.

only do business with family if they understand the industry somewhat. eg, a family member doing psd to html work.

as for people doing shit for free. i'm all for helping someone move, fix a car, give some advice but i'm not working 40 hrs. for free.

Someone once told me something i will never forget-
Friendship and family end, where money begins.

if you say demolishing is so profitable why don't you make some kind of partnership with him. make the website and seo for free and charge him for every contract he signs through the website. I'm sure he will be happy to do it.

Lol this thread is now ranking 4 for city demolition seo, wouldn't be suprised if he did find it.

Uncle Sherbert, that you? This is your nephew, Jim "Bananas" Split. I was googling "fleshlights" and found this forum, and this thread. I hope I'm sending this private message to you right, we'll just have to see. Please apologize to Aunt Sprinkles, I never meant to imply she was overweight at the last BBQ, I guess she was using that rib bone as a toothpick after all. How's Cousin Tooty Frooty doing? Looking forward to the next BBQ and seeing Alex and you again. Keep "cool". Get it? "cool"? Like Sherbert? a hah!
