How the heck does this stuff make money?

dude seriously? its a scraper. it is not trying to drop real links the point is to test if any links get through your system and if so what type of link architecture/script is needed to properly place the link. The bot will paste the line then if it goes through it will record the results for later use.

Im baffled at the fact that I've figured this out and have been on WF 3 years less than you.

Where does one get/find such a scraper for personal use?

Basically they spam links super hard to an illegal level to a domain that doesn't exist. That way they can't get in trouble for the linkspam or have it traced back to them. After the heat dies down they later register the domains and put up offers. Where as most blackhaters register the domain THEN spam, leaving themselves open to liability.

The real trick to do it cheaper is to setup a spamtrap of sorts on a wordpress blog or phpbb forum and monitor for spam that doesn't have a resolvable domain. Then register it out from under them. Problem is you don't know when they'll stop the link spam so you could get the heat for it. Typically though they only spam each domain for 2 days then register after 14-30 so you can start registering on day 10 and you'll catch a certain percentage. Which you can point to domain cash parking to make some easy money.

It really is a good method. I personally do nearly all my hardcore link spam before I register the domains for my new sites and saving the whitehat and greyhat link building for after the site is registered and built.

But do they still do this with jibberish domains? If the domains had actual words in it would make sense but given that these are just random strings of letters what the other guy said makes more sense to me.

To prevent them from being registered out from under you.

There's two types of this form of domain kiting. They use the jibberish domains for cash parking because they only care about the link traffic not the seo, the more jibberish your domains are the less chance of being registered by others. The other is for seo traffic which uses actual offers and keyword domains (usually an exact match foreign tld) which focus on quick rankings. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

The jibberish domain to cash parking method can be amazingly effective. You can also use feeds and cpc ads.
The post I made a few months prior to releasing the domain kiting guest post was actually playing around with it and it was the traffic source i was referring to in the introduction when I said I wasn't focusing on seo traffic lately (yet i screenshot awstats lol).

I don't remember exactly how many domains those stats encompassed but it would shock you at how few (I remember less than 10 at the time of the screenshot). I also pulled a 20% ctr through to cpc ads/feeds with an avg of $0.20-$0.45 per click.

There is no direct linkage between length of time a user spends on WF and direct knowledge. However, you make a good case for my recent hypothesis on ASSHOLES.

Very interesting.

Question though, and this may be fucking retarded, but what kind of trouble have people found themselves in for link spam?

AFAIK noone polices that sort of thing, although clearly, the fact I'm asking tells you I've never done it nearly to the degree to find out!

I wouldn't really know either. I've never gotten into serious trouble or anything of shock n awe. Just a few servers axed and adsense accounts banned as well as a few complaints to my fiber provider. Oh and countless CJ accounts deleted. Though you can get in as much trouble as you pursue I suppose.

I'm pretty sure that particular bot is testing forms.

You can check the anchors spammed, they are randomized on each submit. If they were consistent you could not only reg the domains, you could also footprint all the working link drops with a simple inanchor query.

The bot is super dumb but so simple it cannot be tracked easily.

It was a good question to ask.
