I have just watched "The Road" with Viggo Mortensen.
A father and his son walk alone through burned America after a nuclear disaster. They move to the warmer south, everything has gone, everything is gray, even snow.

It was years that I havent' seen a very good movie, desperately beautiful.

That sounds like a really cool concept. I'll have to check it out soon.

The book is fantastic -- looking forward to seeing the film, as I do like Mortensen a lot.

I found it hilarious that in order to recreate a post-apocalyptic world on a shoestring budget, they filmed most of the movie in and around Pittsburgh. :D

The Road
is a good film; Essentially, there are no living things except humans and on rare occasion, small animals. It's a tough concept, because most people have to depend on staple foods left behind, like canned food. The lack of color will get to you after a while. Last time I saw it was about 6 months ago and there's a short sequence in the middle that still messes with me.

I wonder at how well the book will translate to film -- so much of it is introspect on the part of the father.

Anyone read the book and seen the movie that can comment?

Was it that basement scene? The book describes so much in a much more graphic way. I'm glad they left a few things out of the movie from the book. It would have been very disturbing to see. Aside from that, the movie is a great adaptation. It sets the mood and captures the ambiance very well.

Over all I think The Road is probably the most accurate portrayal of what the end of the world will be like. It's a sad movie, but an optimistic one too.

I'm a sucker for anything post apocalyptic...not sure if that's healthy.

There's some deep talk and movie discussion going on all up in this thread. I've never heard of the movie but I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.

...that basement scene...

I was kind of like

Definitely didn't expect that.

The movie isn't about the end of the world but about the end of society. I was impressed by the novel and concerned about its adaption. The tone of the novel is quite bleak and a full faithful adaptation would be hard to watch.
The movie is very good indeed. It's not heavily depressing and gives focus on the emotional impact of the unknown disaster.

I know it's petty but had to stop the movie a few mins in. The choice of a shopping cart for their transport of staples on terrain such as a gravel road vs. the practicality of just about any other type of cart or wagon available to them just seemed . . .

Will locate the book. Sounds like a good read.

That's actually a point addressed in the book ... and sort of a subtle point about taking what you can get. The cart is shit and a liability under duress, but it's what they have and the father goes out of his way to keep it mobile.

I saw the movie a few days ago and I really enjoyed it. Pretty disturbing the basement scene and when the father was upstairs with the gun to the kids head (when the lady was coming upstairs.) I was also pretty disappointed when I looked at Boxofficemojo and saw that it didn't even breakeven.

cormac mccarthy is a great author. i had no idea that someone adapted his novel into a film. definitely gonna watch the movie and see how it compares to the book.

Amazing movie but I was so disturbed by it that I could never watch it again. Just so bleak and depressing...
