England vs USA

Some days it is better to be lucky. Team USA got lucky today.

So why didn't they win? I have more talent that my brother at basketball and will beat him 100% of the time, FACT. He could never tie me in a game.

Are you seriously using this as an argument? Are you fucking retarded?

Just because a team is better than another team it doesn't mean they will beat them everytime, otherwise sports tournaments would have the exact same results everytime, betting sites would be out of business and sport would be boring as shit..

Obviously it comes down to how well teams perform on the day, and there is of course and a certain amount of luck/variance that happens in a game. But the fact is if England played USA 1000 times hypothetically they would win the vast majority of them.

You've all gah-it all wrong! That Green fellow received a payment in the sum of one thousand quid courtesy of Mr David Beckham (wanker!), plus he got to have a go at his old boiler, you know, that skeleton spice girl bird...all in exchange for 'im goofin' that goal!

Cheers!

a tie. this is the worst "sport" on the planet

If you (and anyone else) dislike soccer so much why do you feel the need to spend so much time in soccer threads saying pointless shit? I dislike NFL + Baseball and I don't think I've even once even clicked on an NFL or Baseball thread let alone released my garbage into it.

Pretty fucking simple we lost the game, we had calamity green in goal, said to my friend a few hours before kick off if green plays he will make key mistakes during this worldcup because he doesnt have top experience and the fact ive watched him all last season and he made quite a few big errors. It was bound to happen and im glad it happened first game because if it didnt he would of carried on in goal and cost us the world cup. Hope capello comes to his senses and plays david james now....

LOL Americans are so stupid. The whole world loves what they call soccer, except for them - therefore, it must be a crap game.

Okay, the game: apart from Green's blunder, England didn't play too badly against a well organised and fairly decent team USA. In the last World Cup, we reached the quarters without actually playing well and I thought tonight, there were signs we could do a lot better. Lampard and Gerrard both badly fluffed their lines in 2006 but they were good tonight; Heskey worked well, and Lennon, Johnson and Wright-Phillips looked dangerous. Rooney didn't get into the game as much as I'd have liked, but his game will come.

I do think both teams will go through to Round 2.

because I actually watched the fucking game, and found myself bored to tears from how slow it is, and then disappointed because they allow ties.

I wish they had longer breaks or time outs or something. I went to the bathroom and missed the '40 goal. I heard the TV people in UK went to a break ~'4 so most of them missed that goal too.

It was mildly entertaining when someone fell over or took a moderately hard hit. It's a shame they couldn't be more linent with the slide tackles, but it's easy to see that a few hard slide tackles could easily fuck your knee or ankle right up.

Also, I think most of the world loves soccer because it's one of the cheapest sports (if not the cheapest) to play.

Didn't USA buy the most tickets besides south africans? That makes it kind of hard to understand this whole debate that, appears everyone in here agrees with that, American's hate soccer...

Just saying...

And the MLS / NHL Comparison isn't exactly an equal comparison...if NHL stadiums held 60k+ people and had tickets for $10 then yeah...they would sell a lot more tickets...almost no NHL stadium hold over 24K...If I remember correctly the winter classic the past three years sold out...

This...Another reason hockey has a small following.

Ties don't happen too often, usually if it gets to 90 minutes and it's a tie it will go into 30 mins extra time which usually allows enough time for a goal to be scored. In the knockout stages obviously there will be no ties.

It can be slow, which is why you need to have some vested interest or emotional attachment to what is going on.. Like I said if you had friends who were fans and you started following their team you would start to like it eventually imo.

Obviously that plays a big part in how global it is, it's so accessible.. But it's a small factor in how much love there is for the game really..

generally if you can play the game for cheap/free then it will get a much stronger following...the only sport I actually play is hockey...but I will go the park with friends and play soccer, football, basketball...and it costs me nothing, all I need to do is show up. Yes you do want to get the proper equipment if you want to play the sport seriously, but a lot of other sports require basic equipment to even play for fun at the park...I don't think you can say the same for other sports like hockey or lacrosse. no one going to go out and spend at least $200 to try a and play hockey when they might play it only a couple times a year...and that $200 is only covering skates, gloves, and a stick...the basics you need to play at the park...when i walk into the rink for a game i've got over $1k in equipment in my bag and $500 dollars in sticks (2 x $250)...that's quite a bit for most people...then to play in a league is at least $300 a season...

So that is mostly true, that the cheaper the sport, the bigger it will be...and because everyone can play it for almost free, they like it...which creates a stronger following...
