Do any of you have friends or family in prison?

A friend of mine just got 18-40 years for arson. Funny thing is the eyewitness said in court it wasn't him and he passed a polygraph but they refused to drop the charges. The brilliant jury still convicted him because his ex-girl (the person who's car was burned up, and who's house almost caught on fire) claimed she saw burn marks on his face a few days after the fire. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Moral of the story - stay far away from vindictive crazy bitches. I paid his $50k bond to get him out while he was on trial (got my $ back when he was convicted) and I'm paying for his appellate attorney. I've been on the other side and I know how important it is to have people helping you.

No, I am not from the police state so going to prison is not as common as in some coountries

Distant cousin pushed a drug dealer out a high second story window because he wouldn't give him his weed.

...When he went outside to get the weed it was, obviously, covered in blood and wasted.

Dude didn't die, serving 10+ years though.

Holy shit 18-40 years for setting a car on fire and a house ALMOST caught on fire? Madness. I can go out now and commit a random murder and be out in less than 18. Way less than 18.

btw am I right in assuming 'unarmed gunman' isn't just an oxymoron? I remember you posting a while back about being convicted of armed robbery even though the jury accepted the fact you weren't armed? lol. not a laughing matter but some people are just retarded beyond belief.

Yeah Michigan is out of control with their shit. We used to have mandatory life without possibility of parole just for getting caught with - or even knowing about (conspiracy) more than 650 grams of a class A narcotic (ie cocaine, heroin etc). There also is no such thing as "good time" which means 18 - 40 means you serve at least 18 years before you're even eligible for parole. Our system is fucked.

I'm 35 now, but yes the Unarmed Gunman thing stuck form when I was a kid and was half-ass involved in a confrontation where one of my friends essentially beat a kid up and took his shit and because he had a weapon we were all charged with armed robbery lol. Funnier yet - it stuck.

Bars of soap (lol), shampoo, toothpaste, soda, snacks... etc

The Government does not pay for EVERYTHING.

Or if they are able to do work outside... they get paid something like 50 cents a day.

Kinda seems illegal for them not to provide you with soap, considering how dirty the place is to start with.

I have a feeling if I ever went to prison / jail I would go into self destruct mode and not eat / shower or do anything... I'd rather be dead than there...

Never known one person to go to prison. hm..

Would love to hear about your prison experiences if you're open to talking about them.

Yeah that is definately fucked up. How's it looking for your friend, any chance of him getting out on appeal?

Ouch, you do time for that? I'm guessing the dude with the weapon did..

The Orange Country DA was trying to get me into prison for medicinal marijuana bullshit. It's amazing how much justice doesn't have to do with what actually happened(or what has happened in other cases) but how the DA chooses to approach it.

I never want to be in that situation again. Having to deal with that shit makes you feel helpless, having to come to court for 3-4 hours while having to wait on everyone else only to have the entire thing rescheduled for the 5th time. The system places importance on everyone's time but yours. They waste so much of your fucking time and don't give a shit. There isn't any "innocent until proven guilty" you are treated like a worthless criminal the entire time.

The entire ordeal prevented me from going to law school, but it got me into AM so sometimes things work out.

Funny thing is once my medical condition landed me in the hospital for 3 weeks and I got an ileostomy the DA realized they would never get a jury to convict me for their BS charges and dropped the entire thing. Between all the stuff the police robbed from my house and lawyers fees the ordeal cost about $25,000 plus all the fucking time it wasted.

He's got a lot of "appeal-able" issues, but there are no guarantees. The odds of winning on appeal are generally less than 2%.

Sure - I'm pretty open about it. Prison sucks (as it should), but it's mostly just a lot of sitting around doing nothing. It takes a long time to wind down from the pace of real life to one of complete monotony and boredom - that was the hardest part. I couldn't imagine going back to prison at this stage of my life because I would go crazy missing my kids.

The other part of it though is a constant feeling of tension in the pit of your stomach that never goes away because you are always on guard. You know the feeling you get when you know some shit is about to go down? It's like that 24/7 and really wears on you. Day after day, week after week, month after month etc.

You also have to be very wary of confrontation. I'm the type of person that generally prefers to confront problems head on, but you can't do that in there. If you make enemies with someone they are right there living with you 24/7 - you can't get away from it. If it's somebody who's ass you could kick it doesn't matter because they won't fight you. They'll plant a knife under your bed then tell the officers you threatened him with a knife. They search and find the knife guess who goes to the hole and doesn't get a parole?

Also, most of the people in prison deserve to be there so they aren't much fun to be around to say the least. You get a lot of human scum you would never deal with in real life but you're forced to deal with 24/7. Think of the people in life you hate the most, the people who you would love to see run over by Hummer. Those are your new cell mates so learn to live with them.

I managed to make it out on time and in one piece by learning to be an expert at conflict resolution and reading people - both very valuable skills that have served me well in life ever since. I wouldn't change a thing.

I have several friends in prison,

One I speak to and send money regularly, it was white collar. He worked for a company that stoke 100mil he kind of took the wrap and only made a few million.

One of my other friends is in jail for manslaughter, he discharged a firearm in a fight and a ricochet killed someone.

I have a friend who's father went into witness protection when I was 15, I never seen or heard from him again.

I know a bunch of people that were in and out of prison and I know a lot of people who are away right now but none I'm really close to.

have/had a friend that just got life for strangling and burning 2 bodies over a deal under 10k, one of the guys he murdered we both went to jr high and high school with. i grew up with this kid, but i dont think i could ever do anything for him now.

my ex's best friend when they were in highschool got in with a bad group of kids. The friend was driving and one of the guys said "pull over here". The kid jumped out went up to a guy and shot him and killed him (can't remember the "reason") jumped back in the car and they took off. Because he was the driver and mostly because he was the only one in the car that was 18 (other were under 18) he went to prison and the others spent a year in juvy. This was 15 years ago, he's still there.
