A question on Weight Loss and Muscle gain for those of you who Workout

*Flexes at thread*

OP - lean meats + veggies + lots of water + protein + cardio + weight training = steady weight loss with muscle gain.

Unless you're competing at a pro level you really don't need to worry about measuring how many mg of sodium is in your protein or which machine will give you a 5% strength increase over the other.

Lol, all kinds of "broscience" up in this thread.

You carb load post workout because it spikes your insulin which prevents you breaking down muscle mass. For every lb of muscle mass you lose your maintenance calories go down and it's harder to lose fat. As long as you keep this reasonable and include protein, it's a good idea.

Running, cycling, swimming, etc. an excellent idea for a untrained individual. Going straight 5x5 is not really the way to go for complete noobs as they're not used to this kind of load. Doing some medium high intensity cardio, and some high rep free weights will allow you to get used to the load and build up your stabilizers and glutes which probably don't exist. This is as much for mental reasons as physical. 3 months in, them you can jump on bill star.

I highly recommend hitting up robertsontrainingsystems.com and also checking out his youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/RobTrainSystems#p/u Do a dynamic warmup, foam roll, and get some split stance/glute work into your program. It will help with your most likely neanderthal posture from sitting at a desk and prevent you from shredding your IT band.

Another key thing is getting plenty of green vegitables in your diet along with some fish oil (get the kind without salmon that are entric coated). This will help with the initial shock of new training because it lowers the acidity and therefore immune response (inflamation) in your body.

Some shit I wrote a while back:

First off, there are only 3 possible goals related to fitness. They include:

increasing muscle
decreasing fat
increasing performance (running faster/longer, lifting more weight, ect)

It is impossible to shrink fat in just one part of your body Ie you can't "tone" your arms or stomach. You can only lose fat everwhere or nowhere. You can however, gain muscle in just one spot. Losing fat can be done relatively fast, however gaining muscle takes a long ass time, and ladies, you are never going to get "big and bulky," especially without steriods, so go out and lift.

If you want to achieve any of these three goals, you need to exercise and eat right. Both are required if you want to make real progress.

Diet

Ideally you want to be eating “clean" meaning things that are good for you and your body can use to make muscle (chicken breast with no skin instead of pizza, cutting out refined sugars/gross carb stuff, etc ). Also it is very important to drink plenty of water throughout the day, forget the sodas.

Next figure your maintence calories:

Go to body fat calculator and figure up you body fat percentage (ignore the rest for now).

[RMR (Resting metabolic rate) X Activity Factor] + Thermic Effect of Food= Maintenance Calorie Intake
{[10 x (LBM in lbs) + 500] X Activity Factor} + (TEF)

Where RMR = 10 x (LBM in lbs) + 500

And Activity Factors =
1.2-1.3 for Very Light (bed rest)
1.5-1.6 for Light (office work/watching TV)
1.6-1.7 for Moderate (some activity during day)
1.9-2.1 for Heavy (labor type work)

TEF (thermic effect of food)= 10-15% X RMR

so 150 lbs of lean body mass for a moderately active person = [10 x 150 + 500] X 1.6 + .10(10 x 150 + 500) = 3400 calories

If you are cutting you should intake about .85 X your maintence calories or 2890 in the example above.

Your protien intake should be around 1.5 grams per lb of lean body mass. For the above example this would be 225g per day.

You protien and calories for the day should be split into 5-6 smaller meals throughout the day. Each meal should have some protein.

To key to getting your diet fixed, is preparation. If you have lots of good food sitting around and no shitty food, you’ll be less likely to eat shitty food.

Routines

First off, doing heavy free weight compound movements ( Squats Deadlifts and more deadlifts) will do more for you than almost anything else, regardless of your goals. This includes you women! Try to avoid the machines (cables not included) they restrict your movement and do not allow you to work your stabilizers. Weak stabilizers = more injuries. Free weights are your friend. Just doing curls and bench isn't going to do it either.

You want a basic split routine of 3-5 days using different body parts each day. Trying to do a full body routine generally leads to overtraining.

Abs: working your abs isn’t going to make your gut go away. You can only shrink fat all over your body, not in just one place. Here is some ab info though ab work more ab work

Cutting (losing fat)

Are you fat?

To lose fat (hence get the fat off your abs so you can see them) you must bring in less calories than you are using in a day. If you are cutting you should intake about .85 X your maintenance calories or 2890 in the example above.

Generally it is advised that you Cut no more than 500 calories below your maintenance level. If you try to starve yourself you will make it harder to lose weight.

John Berardi - The Winning Formula Part 2

HIIT

If you are in shape, most people here would recommend you do HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) where you work out at high intensities for short intervals (who would have imagined?) This technique burns a much more fat then slow cardio.

http://www.musclemedia.com/training/hiit.asp

Interval training may increase cardiovascular endurence more than medium intensity slowmo cardio study

Keto (atkins, southbeach, etc)

If you are extremely obese or you are in a hurry to loose weight keto may be for you. In keto you cut our carbs and as a result burn a higher percentage of fat for energy. Most of us will generally advise you to try a targeted ketogenic diet or one where you periodically load up on carbs, as opposed to pure atkin’s style. Many people also have a lot of success with just cutting out simple carbs (sugar) and keeping overall carbs to a reasonable level, without going into ketosis (100-150g of carbs/day).

Some of the mistakes people make on keto include not getting enough fat, not getting enough calories, and eating to much protein. It is not necissary to do keto to lose weight. If you start eating clean and bring the overall carbs down to a reasonable level, you will do fine, it will just take longer. Also be carefull on keto and limit high intensity work.

If you are skinny/fat bulk first then cut. It will be easier.

Working out at home

It's best to just suck it up and go to the gym, but if you can't: body weight exercises more body weight exercise

Again stay away from machines if possible (bowflex).

You can also put together an excellent gym at home for very little money. All you really need is a good adjustable bench (decline and incline) and some dumbells which can all be had for < $200. When you get more money you can add on a standard 300lb barbell set for < $150 and a rack/cage for ~$250. Play it again sports usually has pretty good deals and they will negotiate. Garage sales are a great place to find equipment especially in August at college towns.

Nutrition Facts, tracking your diet

Go to fitday and keep track of what you eat (note, the fitday numbers are often way off, so it’s best to put in the nutrition info yourself). This info will be helpful if you aren't getting the results you want and need advice. At nutrition data you can get nutrition data.

GNC is overpriced. The stuff you get at the supermarket will probably taste like ass and be over priced as well.

If you search around you will get a feel for what brands most people use, so you don't buy something that tastes like ass and doesn't work.

Given that, chocolate Optimum whey is the favorite around here for the money (10lbs at a time).

If your lactose intolerant try lactaide or dairy ease 2% instead of milk. Stay away from soy and soy milk

don't buy into that protein shake bullshit. after heavy lifting, drink a large chocolate milk. couple that with what the people above me said and you should be fine.

THIS

the chocolate milk does wonders for preventing soreness. PLUS its a good little treat.

Going straight to 5x5 is definitely the way to go. Since they're lifting based on % of their 1RM, their "load" won't be harmful to them.

Bill Starr's 5x5 I wouldn't recommend right off the bat, but OP says he's been doing this for 2 months now; for "right off the bat" I'd tell them to use Rippetoe's Starting Strength.

Actually a 5x5 (or similar) is good for beginners.

Whenever I do workout I do 5x5. Squat 3 times a week and you will burn fat fast. Its like HIITx10

Problem is your 1 rep max is actually higher than you think as a beginner. So you're probably got the quad strength to lift X% of your one rep max for say a squat. What you don't have is any stabilizer strength or glutes. So to do relatively high intensity at 5 reps requires you to compensate by continuing to use all quad (bad form). If you're a complete noob or even an average lifter, doing exercises that really work your stabilizers will be almost impossible with any weight at all.

For example do a split squat. Using any form you can probably do some decent weight. Now do a split squat with your front knee above your heel/behind your toe. Bodyweight will be difficult for most people. So by reducing your load way down and doing high rep you can do things that allow you to work the things that need work (in this case the glutes) without creating a further imbalance (disproportionate quad to ham strength). Heavy weight only makes you good at what your good at. Low weight initially will allow you to do stuff you're bad at (what you need).

If you don't build everything up with relative balance it limits your gains later on. This all depends on your using a decent program, and also knowing what good form is to begin with. Once you've got a base then yes, go heavy.

I decided to go ahead and try to get helathy since I sit at my computer all day. I joined one of these fitness bootcamps last week and it is kicking my butt. But, I have lost some weight and I can see where I can get in shape doing this, along with other stuff.

Part of the bootcamp is an eating plan. Here is my question. I have two two goals. I weight 211lbs at 6ft. The problem is, I have a lot of belly fat. So, I want to lose weight and build muscle. Is it possible to do both?

I bought some good protein. I dont know when to take it. Before, during or after workout? Also, how much? 22gs per serving. I have been taking two scoops after each workout. But, that is 400 calories. I am doing it right?

My fear is taking too much protein and gaining wieght. But, I dont know anything about this nutrition stuff. I am just learning. I just need to get rid of this belly, and build a little definition in my muscles - especially my chest.

I asked this on Yahoo Answers but ended up with 30 responses telling me to go to their direct hoplinked clickbank product for more information. What a waste.

Ignore all these people here about lifting weights, eating right, blah blah blah. I got some berries that will make you look CUT and loose that gut.

Lifting hard twice a week isn't lifting hard. He should be on a 5x5 compound-heavy routine at the very least, Bill Starr and Mark Rippetoe both have good programs in this vein. Lifting every other day is key.
5x a week? That's overtraining for anyone, definitely so for a noob.

He's not trolling. Chocolate milk is good for post-workout glycogen repletion and protein intake IF you don't have a superior alternative, like protein powder. In fact, it works in a similar way since 80% of milk protein is whey and the chocolate is considered high in carbohydrate.

Keep in mind that this is ONLY for people who work out intensely... You can't go for a 20 minute walk as your "workout" and then drink a shitton of chocolate milk, you'll just stay a fat fuck.

Thanks. You have to work extremely hard for this to be of any use. None of this "i do five sets of 10 in 20 minutes" shit. you need to be working your ass off the entire workout.

as was mentioned, cutting out alcohol would be best but I don't work my ass off to not have fun so meh.

Wow. Just... wow. Please point out where in my post I used the phrase "immediately post-workout" -- I didn't.

That aside, do you know why you reload glycogen stores?

Read: John Berardi - Post Workout Nutrition

"You need to consume enough carbohydrates to promote a substantial insulin release. Insulin is the hormone responsible for shuttling carbohydrates and amino acids into the muscle. In doing this, carbohydrate resynthesis is accelerated and protein balance becomes positive, leading to rapid repair of the muscle tissue. Therefore, by consuming a large amount of carbohydrates, you will promote a large insulin release, increase glycogen storage, and increase protein repair. Research has shown that a carbohydrate intake of 0.8 to 1.2 grams per 1 kilogram of body weight maximizes glycogen synthesis and accelerates protein repair. However, unless you've had a very long, intense workout, 1.2g/kg may be a bit excessive as excess carbohydrate can be converted to bodyfat. Therefore I recommend 0.8g of carbohydrate per 1 kilogram of body weight for speeding up muscle carbohydrate replenishment while preventing excess fat gain (van Loon et al 2000a)."

tl;dr version - exercise without glycogen repletion is CATABOLIC.

Oh ok, I guess you didn't say that. We're pretty much on the same page, it's just about timing. I just don't down fast-digesting carbs immediately after anymore is what I'm saying. I get my protein/BCAAs in first, and then the next meal has the carbs (along with everything else).

People who down a ton of weightgainer/sugary protein immediately post-workout are minimizing their fat burn window. I do believe that.

Crossfit + Paleo. You WILL get ripped.

Truth. Whenever I wander from my paleo ways, I can tell in no time it all.

CrossFit is great for certain people, but you need to be careful. 60 year old fogeys and obese people don't need to be doing olympic lifts.

Anything that recommends 7 sets of olympic-style lifts also concerns me. There isn't enough in CrossFit regarding injury avoidance either. The standard CrossFit warmup isn't good for avoiding injury.

But for a main workout combined with OTHER healthy activities, CrossFit is fun and is a great change-up. I love how sprints get incorporated, people often forget to do those and they're huge towards fat loss.

Also, how much? 22gs per serving. I have been taking two scoops after each workout. But, that is 400 calories. I am doing it right?

Sounds like you bought some sugar loaded weight gainer. Take that garbage back immediately.

My favorite protein is Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey. 24g/scoop and about 130 calories per scoop of PURE protein.

Pro tips:
Avoid grains, milk, and sugar.
Eat lots of lean meats, veggies, nuts, seeds, and a little bit of fruit(That's basically Paleo/Primal in a nutshell) and you will feel better and look better by the day.

been some sense typed in this repetative thread but also some absolute shite, some of you bros havent got a fucking clue about human metabolism and or physiology.

again posted this a while ago....shit still true

"
been paleo/primal for about a year and feel better now than i did in my 20's (to be honest spent most of that stoned so that may not be saying much)

in a nutshell

eat meat, vegetables nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. take irregular high intensity exercise and regular gentle exercise. supplment with vit D, Omega 3 and a basic multi vit. dont eat anything that has a shelf life of more than a few days and nothing which your great grandparents wouldnt regonize as food. "

and whatever you do dont fucking carb load after exercise, it doesnt prevent muscle breakdown it spikes insulin which leads directly to the production of fat. FACT.

i lost 26kg last year doing the above and worked out for a total of about 45 mins a week.

any idiot can work hard but a bit of learning and you can work smart and achive more for less

as an extra, watch what protein you buy, some of it is full of shit

+rep ya carb loading is one of the worst advices one can follow..

I say FUCK CARBS... besides veggies.. i know veggies are carbs, but they are the exception, because they have fiber. Fruit in small amounts AFTER a protein/fat heavy meal is ok too. Dont eat fruit on empty stomach or as snacks.
