I wouldn't get a VPS without a root. What's the point? I use shared hostings with good bandwidth allotments where I don't need custom functionality. If I need it - then I get VPS or a dedi.

If a user is screwing up their VPS config - they don't really need a VPS, they need shared/managed hosting with good bandwidth/computing power.

A VPS without root access is not a private server.

If someone offers a VPS without root access they are usually a reseller trying to pawn off a subset of their server as a VPS.

A true virtual private server is essentially a dedicated server without the excess resources of a dedicated server (limited RAM and space) and of course no access the the "real" root which controls all the containers (as you would expect).

But root access via SSH should be provided such that you may root around to your hearts content if you wish.

Now, arguably some hosts may not provide root access because they know client's might screw things up-- that's an altogether different reason, and I recommend you ask them if this is the reason at sign up (because they may say OK if you can prove you are not an idiot :)

[side note - a good shared host will provide SSH access, where you can do most of the things you'll need in managing a web site. Root access is really unnecessary unless you intend on installing custom software, doing php / mysql updates on your own, etc.]

Best Wishes,
Jim

Good God... people are still bumping this thread after a year. Just in case anyway cares, out of the hundreds of vps clients I've had over the past year, I doubt more than 10% of them ever logged in as root, even once. Clients who even know how to use SSH are few and far between.

Preferably no, because it is not possible to maintain clear works of the VPS without root access.

This is the dumbest shit ever.....

How do you intend to give your client's WHM without a root account, In fact why even call it a VPS, why not call it reseller hosting..........

If it is a managed VPS then no.. root access by default should not be given unless an agreement in writing is made that if the customer does have root access and screws it up, the host is not repsonsible(this comes from years of experience). If it is an unmanaged vps then yes root access should be given by default.
Seems everyone seems to think there is no such thing as managed vps's...wich we offer!!!
