2 Years In Prison - A Man's Story

He's trolling, trust me - his story is complete bullshit. I spent 7 years in Michigan's prison system and I can assure you this guy has never been there. Granted it's been awhile for me, but I still have friends inside and I know bullshit when I read it.

Dead Giveaways:

The Aryan Brotherhood does not have a significant presence in Michigan. There may be a few members or wannabe's but that's it.

There were not even close to the number of murders he claims in Michigan prisons. I knew it didn't sound right - looked it up and confirmed it.

Nobody calls the guards "screws" (At least not here). Everybody calls them CO's (Corrections officers).

You can't do phone banking from inside because you have to submit a list of up to 20 numbers that you might want to call - and they have to be approved. All calls are monitored and they have software that prevents 3-way calling or other tricks.

Nobody pronounces "Level 5" as "Level V". Inmates are retarded but everyone knows what a fucking roman numeral V is, and they sure as hell know what level prison they are in.

Rape almost never happens.

Almost every prison has exercise equipment (bought by the prisoners fund which is collected as a tax on prisoners store bought goods). Anything can be used as a weapon, but the administrators know that men are less antsy and violent when they have something to use their energy on so they always make sure to have weights since it makes the prison easier to run.

Nobody calls it "solitary" in Michigan. The hole is the hole. And nobody is sent to the hole to open up bed space lol. Convicts are kept in overcrowded county jails until a bed opens up for them in prison.

His story visiting day is complete fabrication. You can deny a visit very easily and the CO's don't give a shit one way or the other.

You don't get an allowance to spend on food. If you have a prison job you earn the meager few dollars to spend in the store, if you don't have a job you get nothing.

Candy isn't used as currency, tobacco and soap is.

Parole is 2 years, not 1. That's not something you would forget.

There is no "DA" in Michigan, its a prosecutor.

His story about the CO's "redialing" the phone for you is fucking funny. Not only does it go completely against the way the phone system works, but you have to pay for your phone calls so that story gets double lulz.

I could go on and on and on but I can't read any further. Cliff Notes version - you've been trolled.

I was thinking the same thing, but you'd know way better than I would.

Is "An Omar Broadway Film" already out? No torrent site seems to have heard of it.

Just saw the Omar Broadway film is on HBO on demand, going to check that out later.

Yeah, soon as I made my post I went on hbo.com to see when it will be out and it said July 14th. Just saw it this morning on HBO on demand. It was good and from the trailer I kind of expected what was going to be shown. I thought it was going to be a little better though. I hope they do an interview with Omar or something, they said he was set to be released in 2009.

I had doubts about the story so it's nice to hear from someone with experience in that state.

2- The author starts off with some bullshit about how he figured he'd document his stay in prison so he could post it on his favorite forum. -- RED FLAG -- I dunno if its just me, but the last thought that would ever cross my mind if it were me would be about posting this on a forum so that my other internet pals could read about it and 'discuss'. Riiiight. So it immediately seems a lil fishy.

Prison really scares the shit out of me. In fact, no one I know, not even people who work for private prison corps are not terrified of the idea of being inside prison (as a prisoner especially). Although US prisons are a cakewalk compared to say, Russian prisons. But its still prison.

But to me, the most terrifying idea of prison itself is that its all one big clusterfuck of attempts to control chaos from all sides that is utterly impossible to actually accomplish, from both the administrative end and prisoner end.

1) If I was going to prison, I'd definitely use it as an opportunity to do some writing.

2) Your prison experience is completely dependent on the prison you are in. Some state prisons suck. Some are much better.

3) Prison is not terrifying for the most part. The worst thing is the boredom. If you are not there to make problems and if you keep to yourself, you will not have issues. If you have money on the outside and get people to send you some books and so on, you'll do fine.

Where did you do time? How long were you in for?

I'm a CO. Based on many, many conversations with people in the system, my experience watching the little fuckers for 8 hours at a stretch and my knowledge of the system in general.

The place you do NOT want to spend long periods of time in is county. Inmates plead in order to get out of county. I wouldn't want to spend much time in county myself, and I work there.

I'd be a complete handful for prison/jail staff that I didn't like, though. Being on the other side lets you see what works and what doesn't. There are definite weaknesses in the system. For example, if you know how to get CO's in trouble...you can eventually surround yourself with cooperative CO's.
