Thought this was hilarious so I wanted to share...

Anyone ever received an email from a "group of hackers", mostly likely of indian or chinese descent - asking for $200 to avoid a DDOS attack on your server?

I did, today. 40 times. From 40x different servers / ips.

Supposedly if I don't pay them $200 bucks (which they know is chump-change because they are aware of what i paid for said site - per their email) - they are going to launch the attack.

If they start -- for it to STOP - I will have to add a zero to the amount ($2000). So its in my "best interest" to just pay them the $200.

LoL Money LoL --- bring it on bitches, I'm not going to pay you $200 bucks! Just curious if anyone else has had this happen to them.

I'll keep you updated...

When I was doing free hosting I used to have this happen to me a lot. Eventually I just blocked all of Asia since they were causing so many headaches (and not making me any money).

1. Scrape webmaster emails
2. blast out fake hacker fishing template
3. collect $200 per email based on 2% conversion rate
4. lol money lol
5. repeat.

This kind of thing has been going on for awhile. Usually they target porn or gambling sites, and demand a lot of cash.

The $200 demand does make it seem like they are just trolling, but unfortunately the only way to be sure is to not pay and see if the DDOS you.

Even if they do, the kind of guys who would ask for $200 are probably not that good at it, so if you have a decent host their protection gear should be able to null route it pretty easily.

Having worked in the hosting business for 13 years though, I can tell you that the guys who ARE good at DDOS will make your (and your hosts) life miserable.

You and me both. I blocked all of Africa. Absolutely nothing but scammers come from africa and I highly doubt some dude in an internet cafe about to walk back to his mudhut would be buying anything of miine.

Asia was a little more difficult. I took out Vietnam pretty quick. China was debatable. I got a rash of spammers. I mean they always spammed, but i had like 20 spam bots a day. Nothing automated would work, they were pretty slick. I think somebody took out a huge warehouse with thousands of political prisoners doing blog posting and commenting. Poof = China gone.

Pretty bad when you can legitimize cutting off maybe half the world's population from being on the internet.

Interesting stuff let us know how it goes. DDos attacks can be negated but I believe your hosting companies would have to give a crap about you..!
