Big List of Things to Make You Feel Old

I remember when ping was the first video game I played at a restaurant (had to put a quarter in) and T.V's did not have remote controls, the first remote controls on t.v's only turned the dial for you...lol There was no cable t.v and about 3 or 4 channel's to chose from.

Fuck how time fly's...

my 6 y.o daughter is already pretty damn good at playing games on her Dell Laptop and surfing the web, in kindergarten she is learning and reading like we did once we got out of the 1st grade.. she has nintendo ds, wii , flatscreen, streaming netflix and I am sure she is going to be wanting a cell phone before long.

I've got one that turned 5 in May and he's been working the mouse since he as 2. He'll read this year and writing is coming along, too. Flatscreen - check. DS - We've managed to avoid it this long. The Wii is coming from the North Pole in December and I'm sure the cell phone will be here soon although I'm opting for the kind that only dials 5 numbers for emergencies.

Time does fly. I really notice it when I make some reference that completely goes over the heads of my high school students. I wind up stopping class and pulling up video clips to explain some of my personal favorites. It's building schema really, because you HAVE To know these to survive in the modern society:

"There's no crying in baseball!"
"What's s'more?" - "You're KILLING me, Smalls!"
"As you wiiiiiiiiish...."

I could go on, but it's just sad when an entire generation of students hasn't seen Forrest Gump.

I was talking with the son of a friend the other day. The kid is a sophomore at ASU. We were talking about movies and this kid had never seen any of the Lethal Weapon series. Never seen Predator, Commando or any of the good Arnold flicks. There was about a dozen more classics from the late 80's and 90's that this punk had no clue about. I just shook my head and told him to go back to his World of Warcraft marathon sesh.

When I first moved on campus and was around thousands of people straight out of high school, I noticed several things:

- they don't look where they are going when they walk; they are always staring at something in their hand, then if they bump into you, they act like it's your fault.

- they need people to help them in the event they have to write a formal letter, you know the kind that you spent half of 3rd grade (and 4th, 5th) learning how to write.

- if they even go into the cafeteria at all, they don't touch anything unless it's deep-fried or covered in syrup.

And I know at least 3 people who think the primary purpose of a condom is for birth control, and if the girl is on the pill then the guy doesn't have to use a condom since the pill prevents STDs.

The annual list of things that demonstrate how today's college freshman see the world. It makes this thirty-year-old feel old...

Beloit College Mindset List

Saw this yesterday scanning the news. Same age, same feeling.

Most of the 'pop culture' references I made in class flew right over my students' heads my first year teaching. No Dumb and Dumber or Back to the Future quotes, no MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice quotes. Culture moves so fast now that the same amount of change that used to take a decade occurs in a matter of a couple years.

Never pass up an opportunity to school the young on the classics.

I remember first getting cable. With that box that you would have to go up and move the dial to change the channels. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

hubby and I say there's no crying in...<insert relevant term> almost daily to one of our kids or to ourselves. (there's no crying in php hacking)

To bad when your younger you dont realize how fast time flys,,, I always wanted to be 16 - car,, 21 - legal alcohol and so on.. always wanted to be older.

Now Christmas and birthdays are just blip on the screen... life truly is short...

One thing about having a child is you get to re-live your childhood through them.. so cool... plus watch them go through the same shit you did... if there is meaning to life this is it.

Life is not all about having things, money does buy security and a life style but it does not make you happy... You could not have made me believe this when I was younger...

Life is good, enjoy it while you can.
