** Generalized comments ahead - don't get your panties in a bunch~

Finally got some alone time, so I decided to kill the last few hours taking a trip down memory lane - browsing the web for old girlfriends and stuff.

I came across a whole bunch of links referencing a BBS I ran back in the 80's, and after clicking through what seemed like an endless spiral of memories which kept my eyes transfixed on my past, I felt spent... what a rush!

And it got me thinking: My online life started with an Atari 400 and a Hayes 300 (most of you are at the "tl;dr" stage right now, short attention spans and all).

No, it got me thinking about the difference between online marketers of my generation, and the young turks that consider "ballin" a common term - sounds more like a tea-bagging homo to me, but whatever.

Young IM's are more willing to take chances that can yield hugely profitable results. With the right set of cohones, they can make huge bank (most will lose it all before they reach 30).

But many also have little regard for consequences, and will pull shit that is dishonest, immoral and unethical. I am often left jaw-dropped when I see some of the stuff running that is raking in good coin.

Older guys have a calm patience and sense of responsibility that, to our initial detriment, prevents us from raking in a quick buck. But we see the long-term - and can manage what we do as a business, with defined goals. And when things go wrong, our business doesn't crumble like a deck of cards built on booze, swag and broken dreams.

To the turk who knows why I'm writing this, think carefully ... karma really is a bitch.

In this world there are two kinds of people, 1 - the shitheads and 2 - the shitheads that monetize their shit. Pick a side. But I wont disagree with you. Karma is one hell of a motherfucking bitch allright.

who really believe in karma?

case in point edison and tesla

tesla had a good heart and was a genius.

edison was cutthroat.

who's talked about more? who's kids, kids are wealthly?

i don't really think the edison & tesla metaphor applies to what he's talking about...

The term ballin has been around since the 80s. Oh yeah, QQ.

i think you are generalizing a little too much. there is unethical shit promoted in unethical ways by all age groups. This is coming from someone who was also on many a BBS long before there was a widely accessible internet.

Well, I for one will agree with OP that I will not market some shitty product that does jack shit and only ends up making people broke. No, just no.

Treat others like you want to be treated. You don't need to be a Christian to see the logic in that. And your customers will love you for it.

And someone who says that there are 2 kinds of people, and those people are just different versions of being an asshole.. well. No comment. Grow up already.

aren't we all fucking making money around the round ass karma "the bitch"

My only issue with the OP is that he is making it sound like he has an excuse to make less money than people who are unethical, and that it's actually good to make less money because that means you have longevity. I don't think that's a good message to send. It's like a kid who gets a C on a test and then he justifies his grade by saying that all the kids who got an A cheated. Even if that's true, there's no reason the C student can't get an A through honest work.

I can relate (am 32 now but still live young). Back in my day I took way bigger risks than I'm willing to take today, mind you today I'll still take it but only after calculating, weighing in, averaging, and being positive (or close to) that I'll come out on top. Back then it was more like "yeah it might not work, and i'll be fucked, but if it does - oh baby". Today it's more like "Fuck that, well maybe let me see, hmm looks not bad, ok let's do a small test first...".

This thinking does limit you, however just like the OP said, my sparatic crazy risks back in my day made me fucking boatloads, and then a few uncalculated moves and bye bye. I won't say it's because morals were in the way either. But yes, morals do get more defined with time and yes I think that risk awareness starts kicking in once you've either lost it all a few times or once you hit your mid-20's/get some responsibility under ya.

Urghs..

I am currently consulting two guys on their SEO efforts.

They have a high potential site that already feeds 6 people + outsourced developers.
(Think aged local portal site + forum + newsletter)

They are getting reamed in the SERPs by a one man show just scraping local businesses, restaurants and such.

They are absolutely balking at the thought of doing the same, because it is "unethical".
