Google instant search...wtf?

Yeah this is interesting for white hat SEOs that want to focus on ROI vs. SERPs.

Everyone else will just ignore it. ;P

Waitaminute.. This is only for google profiled users? I can't get it to work without a google profile active in the same browser session.

Suggest just got a whole lot more important for KW research. Maybe more important than the KW tool. My initial gut reaction.

I assume they thought of this already and can combat it.. but say for example someone wants to buy coins online.. they start typing "buy coi", and #1 result shows up for "Buy Coi - Buy Coins Online" - a result in which someone targeted "buy coi" and built backlinks with "buy coi"??

edit: nevermind.. it knows not to show half word results.

I think its really stupid, people know what they want to search for. We are all capable of typing a few words into google and those who cant manage it probably havnt yet discovered the wheel so not much to sell them.

Haven't touched my AdWords account in quite a while. But are everyone's impressions going to explode with this in place? I mean the sponsored ads are jumping around just as much as the regular results as you type a search query. Seems like bad news.

Yeah, 3 seconds isn't that long while the user is scanning the suggestions for what to type next, and not actually looking at the adds. Just guessing here, no hard data to back this up, but I can see this thing eating impressions at a vastly increased rate.

my sentiments exactly - especially in the beginning when people are just playing with it. Anyone know what percentage of google searches actually come from the homepage? not embedded search bars, etc?

My thoughts exactly. At least learn from this, see what that top keywords are and focus on those now before this becomes more commonplace

How impressions are counted

When someone searches using Google Instant, ad impressions are counted in these situations:

The user begins to type a query on Google and clicks anywhere on the page (a search result, an ad, a spell correction, a related search).
The user chooses a particular query by clicking the Search button, pressing Enter, or selecting one of the predicted queries.
The user stops typing, and the results are displayed for a minimum of three seconds.
We recommend monitoring your ads' performance the same way you usually do. Google Instant might increase or decrease your overall impression levels. However, Google Instant can improve the quality of your clicks since it helps people search using terms that more directly connect them with the answers they need. Therefore, your overall campaign performance could improve.

uhhh... GOODBYE CTR - while this thing is new people are gonna play with it. Goodbye CTR, goodbye quality score.

hahahahaha

told y'all adwords had gone 4 shit.

now its official.

prepare to be raped, those of you who still believe in it.

This is pretty shitty. I wonder what the threshold is google counting an impressions in time. I mean if the ad shows for 1.5 seconds and they count that as an impression, well that is going to piss a lot of people off.

I dont know why everyone is worried about impressions and CTR. If this fucks with Googles monies this will be turned off this week.

I bet CTR and impression adjustments from Google are reduced today maybe all week until they make sure everything is ok.

If they have to eliminate CTR as such a huge affect on Adwords it looks like they will do it. They want this bad and are rolling it out en masse.

google is imploding. every new idea is a bad one.

As other's have noted, start optimizing for shorter keywords.

Also I bet they turn this shit off within 2 weeks.

you're probably right, but i doubt this is happening in the short term. as CTRs tank, so do quality scores - meaning, in the short term, higher CPCs - there will be lashback from advertisers obviously, but i wonder how long it'll take before the QS algo changes
