Mike Portnoy leaves Dream Theater

I don't buy it. He probably couldn't stand James LaBrie cheese ball vocals anymore.

Agreed, I was pretty big into DT up until a few years ago, the novelty wore off and I couldn't deal with LaBrie anymore. I still love MP though, I really hope there'll be another LTE album.

oh man that sucks. Good thing I got to see them on the iron maiden tour before this shit happend.

Oh well, at least John Petrucci still kicks ass. They'll be hard pressed to find a drummer with the chops of Portnoy though.

Ouch. Been a DT fan for over a dozen years. Was very disappointed in their last few albums until Black Clouds and Silver Linings. Finally something I liked post-6 Degrees

Anyway, Portnoy's awesome, but I also think he's a douche. Comes out wearing an IRON MIKE robe and shit like that. Shut the fuck up, sit in the back of the stage, and play drums.

Either way, bad for Dream Theater... but could potentially be good for metal in general. He might join something epic.

I could see him jumping into the controversial and yet to be finalized Led Zeppelin reunion tour. Portnoy > Jason Bonham IMHO.

He's honestly not all that good, but he is prog legend. There's so many better drummers out there, finding someone with his chops isn't the problem, it's finding someone that fits the role as well as he did.

Was never really a fan of dream theater, cheeseball vocals is a spot on description. John Petrucci has almost zero stage presence too.

Yeah yesterday was a sad day for Dream Theater fans, me included. Couldn't believe what I was reading at first... How often do you see a founding member leave a band at a time when they are doing better than ever? Wtf...

He says he needed a break (probably for personal / family reasons, which I can understand) but that the band wanted to move on with tours and recording as usual (which, from their point of view is also understandable).

Still though, it sucks to lose MP in the band, as he's always been the one at the wheel - masterminding production, album concepts, etc. Thankfully, the creative forces musically are still in the band, and that's what should matter in the end. Drummers who aren't active parts of writing most of the songs can always be replaced, as long as they can keep up technically with DT's complex music.

As for James LaBrie - he's my favorite vocalist of all time. I don't get why people badmouth his singing style / voice at all. IMO, he puts everyone else to shame - even live! And say what you will about John Petrucci's stage presence and all but man - does that man know how to write incredibly beautiful and awesome music!!

I met them all backstage in Oslo a year ago and they are all really cool, down-to-earth guys. Mike's not a douche at all, and the iron Mike thing is just an onstage image thing.

Long live Dream Theater.

Dude I immediately thought of you when this was posted here and was surprised you weren't the one posting it.

Let's face it - Portnoy's drumming was downright annoying the past few albums. He's trying to overcomplicate things and completely failing.

After thinking about it more, I believe they'll bounce back stronger than anyone realizes.

Portnoy can have fun in Avenged Sevenfold.

Lol, yeah it would have been me posting this first if it wasn't for the temporary computer I'm borrowing at this house crashing out on me yesterday. Spent half the day recovering Windows + router problems.

To be honest, I must admit that his growl vocal parts in some of the tracks could have been left out. And I also must admit that I have a strange feeling you could be right about this being a great chance for them to come back stronger.
