“There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256),

and

“The Truth is from your Lord; so let him who please believe and let him who please disbelieve” (18:29).

it lays down in the clearest words. In fact, the Holy Quran is full of statements showing that belief in this or that religion is a person’s own concern, and that he is given the choice of adopting one way or another: that, if he accepts truth, it is for his own good, and that, if he sticks to error, it is to his own detriment.

ISLAM was never the one to start hostility.

Therefore, this verse once again refers to those pagans who would continue to fight after the period of peace. It clearly commands the Muslims to protect those who seek peace and are non-combatants. It is a specific verse with a specific ruling and can in no way be applied to general situations.

Wow. I applaud you. +1. One of the very few members of WF who actually understands Islam and the historical background. Most of these guys only know what the media tells them, but they'll be sure to express their opinions behind their computer screens even if they have no knowledge about it.

THis verse was revlealed during the battle of BADR ( which muslims did not start). non muslims were fully prepared and armed to the teeth and on the brink of invading medina. Muslims had short notice of this planned conquest and numbered only 313 poorly equipped while non muslims were 4 times in number and armed to the teeth. So this verse was revealed to raise the spirits of Islams and to assure them that ALLAH will support them. It doesnt mean muslims are supposed to this all tghe time

you keep forgetting that the QURAN contains many verses which were means of communication to the Holy PRophet (PBUH) for what to do in particualr situations that he found himself in.

 
If lives are at stake by burning a book, why burn it? I don't understand. Who gives a shit what you're trying to prove, never risk an innocents life for your own gain. We live in two different worlds with two different beliefs. Islam is terrorized by it's own occupants, there is constant danger; the only hope they really have is faith in religion, that is the derivative of extremists and worshipers. Yes, it is a double standard, but your first lesson in life is that it is NOT fair and you have to play accordingly. If a man walks up to you and asks for your watch, you will not give it to him. If this man has a gun, however, the rules change instantly.

Also, those of you saying that religion is silly; try not to be so damn close minded. I'm agnostic myself, but I at least accept the possibility of something more - what is life without the unknown? There is no possible way we can know what is real and what's not, it's up to you.

Wickedjoe: I only posted in this thread to condemn the Quran burning and also ground zero mosque idea since they are both so insulting to peoples feelings. but in MISQUOTING those verses you seem to be implying that Quran burning should not be condemned because ISLAM incites its followers into unnecessary agression against non-muslim.
since you brought up the topic of Jihad ( holy war) and are not willing to do some research on the true meaning of it. let me briefly explain its basic concept as it was practiced by the Holy prophet (PBUH) and the early caliphs ( the true muslims)
Jihad as in a military sense is permitted only in three circumstances.

1. repel aggression;

This one is quite self explantory. if you are attacked naturally you will fight back.

2. protect Islamic propagation;
islam has instructed its followers to "preach" ISLAM peacefully and do what they can to guide people to the right path. but if anyone stops them forcefully from invting peacefully they are permitted to fight back but only those who forcefully try to stop one from preaching and Not the innocent people. purpose of preaching is just to guide people and after that it is upto them to decide whats right and wrong.

3. deter Fitnah and oppression and ensure freedom of religion
if muslims are being opressed somewhere and there lives are in danger other muslims are bound to help them.

so in essence, If some non muslim nation did not attack the Muslim one nor mobilize itself to prevent the practice and spread of Islam, nor transgress against mosques, nor work to oppress the Muslim people in their right to profess their faith and decry unbelief, then it is not for the Muslim country to attack those people. Jihâd of a military nature was only permitted to help Muslims defend their religion and remove oppression from the people.

JIZYA:
if muslims are being opressed then the ruling powers are to be invited to islam or become a aprt of the islamic state otherwise. in islam muslims are to pay tax 2.5% on their annual earnings to give back to the state and for social welfare. and theres a certain threshold of income that you must be above in order to be under this obligation. now since islam upholds freedom of religion for everyone, non muslims in the islamic state ought to pay jizya instead of zakat( the usual tax) to contribute to the state. other than that, no sharia law applies to them
Most of the verses of this nature were revealed at a time when the muslims were facing either actual or contemplated agression specially Qur'an (9:29) The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did not initiate agression against anyone, rather he and his followers were under attack from all who sought to crush the new Islamic state. muslims envoys to various neighbouring were captured and killed.

Moreover jihad is a very high level of faith and the muslims of today are nowehere near the muslims of back then on that score. TOdays vast number of muslims specially asians are corrupt liars cheaters dishonest and uneducated and sunnah defying people and need to correct themselves first.
