I'm perplexed as to why this is happening.

I'm in the UK, and I host my .com domains on UK web hosts, I've noticed that I can easily get UK rankings (UK is a pretty big market after US so I don't paticularly mind). I noticed that I can get top 3 ranking pretty easily in google UK, and this roughly translates into getting decent ranking in other english speaking countries such as google canada, google australia, google ireland. As well as some other countries who speak english as a second language (scandinavia, netherlands etc).

If I get top 3 ranking sin google UK, I ususally end up with with page 2 or page 3 rankings in those other english speaking countries, Except the USA. Google USA places me smehwere like page 26 or something, it's ridiculous.

What's the deal with that? sure canada and usa should be treated similary for seo?

Why is it hard to rank in USA? is it because google wants to protect it's "home turf" from outsiders, or could it be that there is so much competition in google USA from legitimate businesses and IMers who optimise for the biggest market.

Which leads me to my second point. Google USA is a large market and it's were most of the compeition is, practically all IMers are optimising for USA and pricing in $$, wouldn't it be time to consider just forgetting google usa, and ranking for these are english speaking, nonUSA terriotires. I'm sure the sum of UK, canada, ireland, scandinavia, australia and others works out the same as USA, and ranks a lot easier too.

The similarities could be drawn to going for long tail and short tail keywords.

Short tail is much hard work, untargeted, bouncy, difficult to convert

For less work you can target a dozen long tails of that keyword, get as much traffic, if not more, and offer affilaites and CPA that the visitors have a high chance of following.

Google USA, a bit pointless going after?

OP, if you're hosting your sites on a UK server.. of course it's going to rank higher in the UK.

Not true. IP location plays an incredibly small part in SEO.

I have a website that ranks #1 for extremely lucrative keywords in the U.S, hosted in the U.S.

I recently moved server to the UK, and absolutely no change in rank.

I'm not sure how much of a part IP location plays for Google US

but did you check out your rankings for Google UK instead of US after the move?
