i got my first credit card through wellsfargo when i signed up for a checking account. I hate them and never use the card anymore but they accepted me with no credit but it was only about 300$ limit

I wouldnt be so sure of that. Getting credit with bad credit is easier than getting it with no credit.

I have to disagree with that. I got 5 cards when I had no credit. Then I got bad credit from max'n all of them out and paying late. My credit is still kinda bad, but I don't need credit anymore. :)

First Premier charges like $175 to open and then $120 annually with a measly $250 credit line. I can't believe you would recommend that card. That should be a last resort option.

I probably have to get a CapitalOne since those jerks at Citibank don't accept black people.

uh, wtf. How do you guys have such low limits?

I turned 18 in October, had zero credit, and applied for a Chase Visa card. Within 2 weeks I had it in my hands. I was given a $1500 limit.

You could try using a Visa debit card to fund your projects. Might be easier than getting a credit card, if you're having this much difficulty.

That's because you had a joint account with your father.

My father didn't trust me when I was 18, so he never let me open a joint account with him.

Credit management is just a game. You need to learn the rules or pay someone to play it for you.

Certain banks - and this changes often - give higher limits to everyone who applies during a particular time period.

Banks like you to pay fees - but not late fees, those will ruin your credit.
If you want to build a history fast, you need to cash those APR checks and pay it back on time and slightly above the minimum.
In return, once you pay off your balance, they'll give you a fat credit increase.

Now for some actual advice [R]DeVore
  • get a free credit report, check that your personal data is accurate
  • pay $6 and get your credit score
  • don't apply for more than 3 cards in a 30 day period, unless you want your score to drop another 30 points
  • definitely avoid going over your limit, and pay on time, try not to utilize more than 75% of your available limit

There's a lot more to it but follow those few rules and you'll be fine for the most part.

The hard part is getting an increase on your credit limit from 15k to 150k ;)

um, no. I don't have a joint account with either of my parents. It isn't tied to them whatsoever.

Both Wells Fargo and Bank America have reasonable secured cards you can open with as little as $300 a month deposit. Much better than some of these others where the fees are ridiculous. I would suggest going with one of those and using that to build your credit.

Good call. Both of these will actually convert your card to a nonsecured if your a good boy toy. A lot of the others will not because they want their annual fees. Unsecured cards on your credit report own secured cards anyday.

Have you tried your own bank? When I came to Canada it was easy to get a credit card by putting $1,000 into a government savings bond. I tried the store cards, gas stations etc all were declined due to no credit. The ironic thing was that the UK uses experian for credit checking, same here but they do not look at overseas records ....

Good luck

my gf is 18 and has a $5000 limit with chase, no parents involved but then again she has a 760 fica.
Do beware that Chases online reporting takes about a week to show transactions

I use my chase card often (it's from amazon) and I never noticed a week delay in reporting... hrm. Chase is upping my CC limit auto ever 6 months or so and I LOVE their online interface so many options, etc.

I have however started slowly switching over to my amex because the benefits are a LOT better. 5% back on many things + 5-15% back from some partners, and 2% on all other... much better han my 1% from amazon in form of amazon cards. When I got my amex I didn't see a blip on my credit history so as far as I can tel they didn't even check my score, probably used some other methods.

I pay for credit monitoring like $9.95 a month and if anyone does a lookup, or a change is made to my credit report I get notified via e-mail. For the price it's nice security. (I think some places may offer it free?)

My first credit card was $500 limit when I was in high school, I still have it today with the $500 limit, lol.

My first credit card was from Chase a number of years back when I was 18.

It started as a $400 limit, about two months later was raised to $600, then $1200 a few months later.

That's with no parents attached, and that was based on zero credit.

I'd recommend going to a store like Sears, Zellers etc and applying they're really easy on first timers but with horrible rates, use the card for a month or two pay your money back and apply for a regular card with better rates your credit score will go up, its what i did it worked.
