$1 .coms @ GoDaddy

Good deal, but then add on the $8 (can't remember exact price) for the Whoisguard and you're pretty much lookin at the regular rate.

First questions you need to ask yourself when you deal with godaddy is- what's it gonna cost me in a year? how much shit do I have to go through to get the domain away from them?

I think you can transfer it out after a month or something like that...you can go to a place with free WHOIS guard like Namecheap or Netfirms and re-up with them for another year.

Generate a Random Name - Fake Name Generator + own e-mail address > most "whois privacy" services.

Courts can subpoena whois companies not only to reveal your identity but also silence them from notifying you about the identity leak... you won't know what's up until your door gets broken down. Fake identity + own e-mail = they'll have to notify you to show up personally, since otherwise you just don't exist... [true, they could subpoena your host and such, but from my experience with licensing/intellectual properties... their first point of contact is always the domain holder's e-mail address]

Some whois privacy services are basically just e-mail relays that bounce X@whoisservice.com to your actual e-mail address instantly... in that case it's fine :)

LOL if you guys are gonna do some shady shit do it right, eurodns domains + leaseweb hosting. Using the name Mayor McCheese on your whois info won't stop a subpoena.

Leaseweb? You know the country where Leaseweb's servers are located requires any and every bandwidth provider to log packet headers at isp level during a six month period? Leaseweb is one of the last places people should look for privacy...

Fictitious (read; fictitious... not fairytale...(Mayor McCheese <-- this could get your domain deregistered!)) whois information won't stop subpoenas, but least they will arrive in your mailbox, allowing time to analyze and plan accordingly...

Whois services that store communication and aren't automated 1:1 relays can be subpoenad to reveal your information + keep quiet about it... you won't know shit until someone knocks on your door in real life. That's the difference.

ps; best 'privacy oriented' hosting in Europe comes from Hosting.UA...

If you've got enough heat on you... you could arrange for them to fly staff to Tanzania [...] and mirror your network from there... really great staff :)
