$15 Minimum Wage in Seattle Approved

Why beat around the bush with this "$15 per hour" crap? We should just raise the minimum wage to $100 an hour and end poverty once and for all.

Heck, that isn't even enough. We need to just allow the workers anything they want as they ask for it so everyone can have everything. Poverty won't even exist after that.

That's a retarded argument and made by noobs who are frustrated at their inability to analyze the issue. Even the most staunch proponents of the minimum wage recognize that after a certain level that the minimum wage starts to become counter-effective. $15 is not at the level.

Some reading before you spout more tired arguments:

All of the Arguments Against Raising the Minimum Wage Have Fallen Apart

Clearly jerry55 is just trolling here. All is good. Phew..

People on this forum should be championing a minimum wage increase for their own self-interest. More money going to the working class = more money in the pockets of the people who you target your offers to. It's not the Bill Gates and Warren Buffets of the world who are spending money on your weight loss/dating/gaming/health offers. It's the people who would be given a spending boost by the minimum wage increase.

What if I can only afford to my my employee(s) $12 an hour?

I didn't read responses - but a $15 minimum wage seems counterproductive. All the small businesses will be simply unable to hire staff - and big businesses will cut employees to make up for profits. And anyone with any real skills is earning over $15 an hour anyway.

If I've learned anything about America in the last decade - it's that you're not going to force big companies to do what you want [especially part with money] with stupid little things like laws. If they raise the min wage, the companies will respond. And the min wage people will still lose.

Also - because many people lose their jobs, due small businesses/shops not being able to afford a zitty 19 year old durrhurr for $15 an hour - the durrhurr goes on welfare. And that's more monies out of taxpayer pockets. Gluck, seattle.

What is that amount and why wouldn't you just raise it to that optimum amount?

It's not for the people. It's so they can generate more tax revenue + get more votes.

This discussion is pretty much void without looking between the lines.

^^ There's no income tax in WA, they raise money through property, fuel, etc. taxes to pay for things. We have cheap electricity from hydro power.

There are a lot of data centers in eastern WA with cheapest electricity in nation. Lots of different industry from boeing, microsoft, amazon, nintendo, major shipping ports, agriculture, commercial fishing, tourism, timber, etc. it's more resilient than a lot of other places in the country. And it's fucking gorgeous.

Yup. Seattle is one of the last great cities in America. It's the weather that gets to me, though.

On a side note, I've read arguments against the minimum wage from Mises (and a few other unrelated Austrian economists), as well as arguments in favor of it from various other sources.

It's one of those rare instances where I can't choose sides. I'm going to have to study economics more before I can form a confident opinion on any of it.

This is definitely a good thing.

A living wage is a great boost to the economy. The .0001% have proven over the last few decades that they don't give a shit about anyone except themselves and will do all they can to pocket money at a level of extreme that comes at the cost of the workers who actually produce the product.

Laws like this will help undo some of the damage that the greedy execs and companies have done to the American middle class over the last few decades.

People don't get paid $8 an hour because "that's what they're worth," They get paid crap wages because they have virtually no bargaining power, especially in a country where the economic-political powers have done all they can to attack the working class and unions. CEOs know how to bargain and have their buddies seated on the boards. Your average blue collar guy has no idea how to negotiate - and when he tries to, the companies bring in the union-busting firms. The average worker shouldn't get punished for his lack of negotiating skill, especially when he is the one creating the wealth that is funneled to the fat cats.

So let me get this straight.. You would have absolutely 0 problem showing up at someone's place of business, demanding to see the owner and giving them this ultimatum, "Either you pay every employee at least $15 an hour here, even though this is *YOUR* business and employment here is voluntary, or we shut down your business and/or stick you in a rape cage. If you resist, I'll murder you."

I just want to be sure you're the type of person I'd like to avoid, you know.. the type that think solving problems through threats and aggression like some pot-pellied ginger bully on the playground is a-ok.

Hey everyone, meet jerry!

We got our very own Cliven Bundy here. Let me guess you don't pay taxes either. Welcome to internet forums: the last refuge of anarcho-capitalists and Mises-tards.
