$23.6 billion lawsuit won against big tobacco?



Didn't they print any warning on the cigarette packets like "Smoking is injurious to health, Smoking kills"?

When is someone else going to file a case against government for not banning the product which is injurious to health and win the case??

Actually, this guy started smoking at age 13 in the 70s, some years after the surgeon general issued health warnings about smoking and some years after they started teaching that smoking is bad for you in health classes in schools. Also some years after mandatory health warnings first appeared on all cigarette packaging in 1965. So I can't believe that he didn't know smoking is a) addictive and b) bad for you. It blows my mind that anyone could conceivably think otherwise. Furthermore, what role and responsibility did his parents play in this, letting a 13 year old kid smoke? This whole thing is so devoid of common sense, it blows my mind.

Additionally, most of the jurors on this trial were younger than 45 years old and, I'm guessing, non smokers.

The guy in this case died in 1996 at 36 after starting smoking at 13, so 1973. Cigarette warnings first appeared in 1966, which makes this judgment even weirder...

Updating this thread with the Monsanto statement is timely and good correlation.

However my question is, "When are those big tobacco companies rolling out (pun intended) the Marley's and other Cigs everyone's been talking about for decades"?

With all the smoke-free areas and cities even, as well as e-cigs, seems like the tobacco industry is going to have to take the back seat.
 
The tobacco industry in the US has been taking the back seat for quite a long time. Smoking prevalence continues to decrease. The US already had one of the lowest smoking prevalences in the world and it's still going down - it dropped from 21% to 18% from 2005 to 2012.

This has been noticed for years. Part of the reason might because Florida has the 4th highest state population (along with millions of tourists), which would help with the volume of stories coming out of there.
