"Some 30 percent of Americans cannot say in what year the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against New York's World Trade Center and the
Pentagon in Washington took place, according to a poll published in the Washington Post newspaper."

"While the country is preparing to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives and shocked the world, 95 percent of Americans questioned in the poll were able to remember the month and the day of the attacks, according to Wednesday's edition of the newspaper."

That is really really sad.

I will NEVER forget that day. It was on that day that I had my very last surgery to remove cancer from my lungs.

I remember walking in the University of Michigan's Children's Hospital and seeing everyone crowded around the televisions. Doctors, patients, nurses, families, everyone.
My doctor was focused and unwavered even in all that was going on thankfully, so my surgery was successful.

But not many people would forget that day. It is a shame to see so many that do.

What's even worse than forgetting the date, September 11th, 2001, is the people who have forgotten why are boys and girls overseas are risking their lives everyday. And the politicians have forgotten what our boys and girls overseas are supposed to be protecting.

No wonder, they interviewed 1,002 old people:

This memory black hole is essentially the problem of the older crowd: 48 percent of those who did not know were between the ages of 55 and 64, and 47 percent were older than 65, according to the poll.

The Post telephone survey was carried out July 21-24 among 1,002 randomly selected adults. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.

This is an insignificant stat..

Just because you don't remember a date, doesn't mean an event is not important to you.

I vividly remember a day when I had to take my dog to the vet's office to be put down... horrible day, I remember every minute of it. But... I cannot remember the date.

Dates are only really important to history buffs, political junkies, and the media.

Good point but cmon, it was probably the most historically significant event of the last 30 years, maybe more.

I had to think about it to remember what year it was. I could see myself not being able to remember the year sometime in the future. I don't think I'll ever forget the phrase "september 11th" or "nine elleven" though.

Weird that so many people don't know the year anymore after only five years.

I still remember it perfectly and I even remember some things I did that day. I still know some funny things that happened at school that day and I still remember who told me I had to watch the news when I came home from school.

I remember the day perfectly well, too. I remember waking up to watch the 2nd plane hit 2nd tower. I remember searching for "Osama Bin Laden" and finding an interview where he said that he hated every American just because they live in the U.S. and just couldn't understand how somebody could be so screwed up to think that way.

Like Karnul said, just because they can't remember the year it happened, dosen't make it any less signifigant in their mind.

Something similar *could* have happened today. Apparently there were plans to blow up 3-20 planes going from Heathrow (UK) to the US.

I don't know many of the facts yet though.
