And this is where I get pissed off.

I mean, seriously? You have ONE FUCKING ANECDOTAL EXPERIENCE, and decide the plant is evil. Then you spew your uninformed shit on the internet, mongering fear and hate for a substance that has enormous potential to help people.

I'm frustrated by this because my mom is in the same boat. My mom takes a few vicodin every day, some xanax to go to sleep, benedril when the dog sheds, coffee every morning, and I don't doubt she's chemically "addicted" to all of these "legal" drugs.
But her brother died of a stroke while he was high, and since marijuana thins your blood, she reasons that cannabis killed her brother, so she'll never smoke weed for her pain.

My mom's been in ridiculous pain since I was very young. Her medication makes her moody and irritable, and usually her back hurts so much she's bed-ridden by 3pm. I've hoped she'd come around to using a natural plant to help her pain, for many years. I even bought her a Medical Marijuana license, but she refuses to smoke. I baked her brownies, she won't eat them.

Your anecdotes and "personal stories" are crap. It's a green plant that grows under the yellow sun and drinks the blue water. It could give you lung cancer, and as it relaxes your mind and aids concentration, nulls your pain, increases your appetite and helps many people fall asleep, it also makes you feel slightly stupid.

Only an idiot would say that there's no risk, but only conventional wisdom says that the harm outweighs the good. I'll side with the idiots on this one.

Knew someone was going to lay that shit down so I didn't have to do.

Real talk itt.
Time to go smoke a bowl and find something to do.

no reason to laugh, smoke inhalation of any variety, be it weed, cigarette, or sticking your face over a smoldering plastic fire, is bad for your lungs. it may not kill brain cells, but it's unhealthy. legalize it, but i don't plan on smoking.

I've never ran across such a logical non-stoner who sees things so clearly on this topic ... and likes to trip balls with He-Man. An interesting guy you must be.

So are these babies:

Oleander
Water Hemlock
Rosary Pea
Deadly Nightshade

On a serious note, you've referred to situations that are totally different. I'm sure most people who've posted in this thread and most people who smoke weed in general do not suffer from any conditions which make smoking marijuana necessary. If you're a perfectly healthy individual, smoking weed is bad for you in one way or another because as you've mentioned, "only an idiot would say that there's no risk".

On the other hand, if you're suffering from a condition which makes smoking marijuana a necessity, we're talking about a totally different situation. If a doctor recommends smoking marijuana, that's a whole different story. Even if the risks are still there, the pros outweigh the cons.

Cannabis is a plant, just like "those babies", oleander, nightshade, hemlock, etc.
There's no reason that this one plant should be more illegal than the rest -- it's not the only smokable plant, nor is it the most dangerous smokable plant.

Now, as to your argument of use-vs-abuse: I've always found it interesting when the anti-grass nazis use the word "need" to defend medical marijuana users. When did "need" become part of the argument?
My mom doesn't "need" weed. She also doesn't "need" vicodin, in the sense that she'd still wake up in the mornings without it [but we'd never even get her out of bed]. Weed would make her chronic back pain managable and tolerable, thus improving her quality of living.

Now, consider that cannabis is also known to treat depression -- like, as an alternative to SSRIs, which are dangerous and addictive. And consider that, depending on whos numbers you use, somewhere between 20-40% of Americans classify as "depressed" and most of them are medicated for it.
These people don't "need" the SSRIs, which are clinically proven to have side effects ranging from "uncontrollable bladder" to "thoughts of suicide". But the SSRIs, which MIGHT make them want to kill themselves, USUALLY improve quality of life.

Cannabis use almost always improves quality of life. It rarely kills anyone. And, beyond whispers of lung cancer and the "memory loss" bogey-man (neither has been proven in an unbiased study), it has hardly any negative side-effects. You'd be hard pressed to argue that it's not much safer and more effective than most of the medicines prescribed today.

yeah I'm going to disagree here. I haven't met a person who smokes weed daily that isn't lazy or lethargic.
I smoke pot for my ADD, because without it, I'm lazy and lethargic.

See, the problem with basing your ignorance off the phrase "I've never met a [xyz]" is that arguing with an [xyz] himself is very hard to do.

I have a friend that smokes at least 3 times a day and he is the most high-strung individual I know. I would hate to see what would happen if he stopped smoking.

But seriously, any arguments made for the continued repression of weed is negated by all the other shit that will kill you that is perfectly legal.

All things in moderation. Just about anything in a certain degree of excess will kill you.

Only 4 or 5 times in my life.

Only got high 1 time.
Not really my thing I guess....

I hate the taste of smoke in my mouth.
Each time I did it, I immediately had to go home, brush my teeth, floss, gargle and take a shower to get the smoke off and outta me.

Now drinking.. that's a vice I gots no problem with.

Yeh man i know what your talking about i was exatly like that and then i got high for the second time and then i fuckinig loved it.

well in my experiences, plenty of people I know smoke daily, and out of all of the daily smokers, they're all lethargic/lazy. aside from that, my point stands - it's still smoke, and smoke inhalation is still smoke inhalation, regardless of the type. it's particulate matter that is an irritant to the lung, which not even mentioning cancer, can lead to bronchitis, asthma attacks, and decreased amounts of oxygen into the blood stream due to smoke particles blocking the entrance to the blood stream by coating the pulmonary alveoli.

now, am I saying ban it? no. legalize it. however nobody can make the argument that it's a cure-all without side-effects. it has side effects, and does contain known carcinogens - but so does tobacco (keep that legal too).

so yes, make it legal - but don't act like it's the new acai berry or resveratrol.

When did "need" become part of the argument?

It's a pros vs. cons thing. If your doctor decides that the pros outweigh the cons, it's obviously smart to follow his/her advice. That goes for depression, social anxiety disorders and other stuff as well.

I smoke a few times a week, mostly on the weekends, and usually the finest buds around. I'm somewhat of a connoisseur I guess you could say.

That being said, OG Kush is the shit right now :d

The finest buds around, eh?
I see you're in Toronto.. we should talk, hah.

Wish I was puffin' on OG Kush right now, ugh.. summer is a bitch for bud around here. Market is all out of wack.

Alcohol is the biggest gateway drug out there.
If I weren't already drunk, I'd never have tried my first hit of weed, coke, speed, fantasy or ecstasy.

And that chick in the 15 bucks for sex ad is clearly on something other than pot.
She looks like she hasn't slept in days, and has the sallow complexion of someone suffering jaundice, or maybe Hep-C. They've made her look like a heroine or ice junkie. People that only do pot don't have waxy pallor like that unless they're also seriously malnourished (which is kinda hard ot be ccnsidering the munchies)

Raidon:
You're a fucking moron... Marijuana contains no nicotine in its natural state.

JohnMatrix: Yeah, that ain't normal... You're either one of the poor 3:250 people that it tends to cause psychotic fits in, or some dick laced it with Mortein or coke.
That said, if you're sticking with liquor, head over to 1806 on Russel.st
The guy that runs it keeps winning awards from international comps for his drinks.

Uber: Clearly they were so high they thought it would be a good idea to talk smack to a crack dealer that gave them a whack... He was most likely black, and that's a fact, jack.

Originally a meth ad, Photoshop I assume ...

I completely agree, they sound like the retards saying "where's my second google kit, I swear the information I've been spoon fed is true!". That being said let me cheer you up.

When I first entered AM full-time, I smoked all day every day. Now, I smoke only at night and sometimes during the day because I can't communicate well when I am stoned (and I'm on the phone most of the day). If I am working all day on repetitive shit or brainstorming and don't have to handle phone calls all day, smoking definitely gets me going and I come up with the best shit ever when I am high. Plus, the "boring work" in AM gets done a lot better than if I am sober because when I'm blazed, even writing code for landers and designing bullshit ads is fun. Otherwise, I just get blitzed at night and I am happy with that because during the day (most days) I'm too busy to even think about smoking anyways.

ive seen marijuana turn highly productive individuals into complete lazy asses.

i smoked weed everyday for about 4 years.. felt so much better after i stopped. i can sleep for 6 hours and feel refreshed the next day
