I have held a few contests on 99 designs. Each time I usually select 1 "winner", but end up contacting 3 - 5 more people and buying their designs as well for split testing, or just for other websites.
Also, my contests were always over $1000 to the winner.

I've seen some really nice logos come off of contest sites. The problem is usually the client (contest holder) that has no idea of how to guide or select a great logo. Lots of times you can look through contest that have fantastic options submitted but the client choose something that you wouldn't consider giving away. To each their own.
Again if you understand design and brand identity you can guide the designers to make a really nice logo for you.
Also although I understand that big firms can make outstanding logos (that cost a lot of money), some of the biggest brands today have paid next to nothing for theirs.

How much do you usually pay those designers who didn't win?
This is something I've considered doing as well.
Designer here, been doing client work for lots of years. Not anymore.
Sometimes, these days, I'm doing a random contest that I like, for fun.
Main motivator is not the money, so its relaxing.
1. I get to choose the projects that seem fun.
2. No client to bitch for no particular reason and if they like it, they usually appreciate the work more.
3. Keep the creative juices flowing.

The feeling you get when someone picks the worst submitted design, and ignores the best ones. It happens all the time..
Years ago I entered random design contests on forums to burn some free time, and the winning design was always the shittest one. When other members and myself explained the best one was clearly xyz, every single time the worst one was picked.
My point: Your wasting time trying to design something for someone who has no idea what they want.

Also these sites and the $5 logos are bad for designers and* buyers.
What was once.. $200-500 for a quality logo, and trusting the designer to make the right choice for your brand as an OUTSIDER.
Has now turned into:
$5, and 10 revisions on what YOU think is "cool", for a logo so freaking awful. That $ petty cash might help now, but it's going to hurt down the road.

I have branded a few WF members companies in this forum. Actually, i jut finished up another one last week. There is no way in the world that any legit designer and business minded individual would ever use 99 designs. The business model is great...for the owner of 99designs. Everyone else if pretty much screwed. The designers dont make any reasonable money for their labor and businesses, although they feel like they are getting great logos or designs, are paying for it in the long run when they find out they cant trademark their logo because 1000000 other companies have the same mark or likeness.
Why barely make a few hundred dollars a month when you can make thousands or tens of thousands if you market your services correctly. If any other WF members are interested in my services, pm me.
