In my spare time, I volunteer with a YMCA program that essentially allows high school students to learn about the ins and outs of our state government. It might sound nerdy or boring, but it's actually an awesome program.
We go to three conferences a year, and the third one takes place in Sacramento where the kids actually get to completely take over the state capitol for a week, where they then get to present/debate/vote on bills that they've written themselves. There is also a court program they can participate in.
The bills that pass even end up on the Governator's desk, and he can decide whether or not they are worth pursuing for real. In the past, some bills the kids made have actually gone on to become state law (the bicycle helmet law, for example).
Anyhoo, the program is sort of expensive. Total cost this year for the kids I work with is around $1,300 (includes travel, conference fees, meals). Some of their parents simply can't afford it, so we do a bunch of fundraisers, grant writing, etc.
The YMCA is a non-profit organization, so donations are of course completely tax deductible. If you wanna help out, send me a message and I'll give you all the details.
These kids are the future. Please help them out. I have a dream.
