I have been using GoToMyPC to access some of my computers when using my laptop. But the subscriptions are quite expensive.

What other solutions are there? What about something like WinGate?

Just want to get a feel for what is a cheaper alternative.

Thanks,

Jon

Totally agree, LogMeIn is great, saved my life many times.
(But if you need file transfer you need to pay for the pro version since the free is just for " controlling the screen")
Logmein.com is good if you want a simple easy way to connect. RealVNC isn't really user friendly at least in my opinion.

XP has Remote Desktop

As long as you have the correct ports open and can get your IP you can connect to it...

If you have a Dynamic IP (Most DSL Companies it seems) then there are programs/sites out there that will provide you with a static ip/address for your comp and have you install a client to update the IP from your comp.

I have two reasons for remote connectivity: firstly, for my own use. secondly, for use of an outsourcer.

There might be occasions when I would need to use an internet cafe (e.g. if on holiday). Can you use realvnc from an internet cafe or would that involve downloading a bit of software first?

They do have the ability to connect to you home computer via a browser, but the viewer file is only like 200kb so its easy to download or keep on a thumbdrive.

I havent had a chance to look at logmein.com but I have a few questions

So logmein acts like Remote Desktop correct? If I needed to say, upload a file from my home PC to FTP while I was at work it would be possible to do that through logmein.com?

Yes. It's exactly like remote desktop but web based. You can actually do terminal services via the web as well with the correct Active X controls.

so why doesn't everyone just use remote desktop? Am I missing something?

Not every machine has the remote desktop client on it. Administrators block ports or block you from using it. Most home users have a dynamic IP as well, logmein always knows your ip. And it's purely web based. You can get into it from a browser.
