AdTech:SF 2010 Hotels

not just the US, I've experienced this outside. "Upscale" hotels and resorts do it mostly. Cheap and business-travel oriented places have free internet.

Something is fucked up about Motel 6 and Hampton Inn having free WiFi, but not the Grand-god-damn-Hyatt, Omni, etc.

I've been in quite a lot of hotels last year in Europe and I didn't have to pay for free Wifi... the only places where I still see this happening is in the states.

and yeah, totally fucked up..

it is totally fucked.

all the decent starwood hotels (westin, le meridian, etc) that i've been to in europe charge either 20 euro/day or 5 euro/hr for internet. its bullshit. the only reason i give in is because i am usually staying on points.

at the sheratons ive been to in europe, if they give you a club floor room you are usually good. otherwise same deal as above.

Ditto that, upscale places stick it to you because they can. Some cities are worse than others. You can count the number of hotels in Vegas with free wifi on one hand.

I think the moderately priced domestic chains give better perks because there are so many chains competing for casual travel dollars. One chain I like a lot is La Quinta, which has free wifi, free full breakfast and free soft drinks at all hours in the dining rooms. The rooms are pretty nice, too, as nice as the fancy hotels. There is no lobby, restaurant, or bar at all. Just a reception desk.
